The human body is an interconnected organism organized from cells into tissues, organs, and organ systems. A common introductory framework describes eleven organ systems, but their functions overlap: together they support the body’s structure and activities.

This guide explains that organization, introduces the four basic tissue types, and uses the skeleton to show how body structures work together.

How is the human body organized?

The body’s levels of organization build on one another. A cell is the smallest independently functioning unit of a living organism, according to the NCBI Bookshelf chapter Medical Terminology. Similar cells form tissues; tissues combine to form organs; and organs work together in organ systems. The whole system of interacting parts is the organism.

The body contains trillions of cells. Cells take in nutrients, convert them to energy, provide structure, and perform specialized functions, as described by MedlinePlus Genetics.

What are the four basic tissue types?

Introductory anatomy groups tissues into four basic types. Each has a general role, though tissues work together in organs rather than acting alone.

Tissue type Introductory role
Connective Supports and binds.
Epithelial Covers surfaces and lines passages.
Muscle Contracts.
Nervous Carries messages.

These descriptions follow MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia’s overview of tissue types.

What are the organ systems of the human body?

A common teaching classification, used in the NCBI Bookshelf’s Medical Terminology chapter, identifies eleven organ systems. It is a useful map for learning anatomy, not a rule that each organ belongs to only one system. The body’s systems interact to support its overall functions.

Organ system Structures or focus
Integumentary Skin and related body coverings.
Skeletal Bones and the body’s supporting framework.
Muscular Muscles.
Nervous Brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
Endocrine Hormone-producing structures.
Cardiovascular Heart and blood vessels.
Lymphatic Lymphatic structures.
Respiratory Structures involved in breathing.
Digestive Structures involved in digestion.
Urinary Structures involved in producing and removing urine.
Reproductive Reproductive anatomy, presented as male and female in the chapter’s classification.

The skeleton: one system with several roles

The adult skeleton has 206 bones, according to the MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia (reviewed 2025-10-01). Bones help shape and support soft tissues, protect some internal structures, and act as levers with muscles to enable movement. They also store minerals such as calcium and phosphate, while bone marrow is where most blood-cell formation occurs.

This example shows why systems are best understood together: bones provide support and leverage, while muscles act on that framework to produce movement. The systems are teaching categories within an integrated body.
