Not through a documented league table, but through ambitious building projects that developed ideas about plan, height, light, sculpture, and stained glass. Chartres helped shape later Gothic design, while Reims and Amiens adapted and enriched that tradition in different ways.
What the “contest” means
“Contest” is a vivid way to describe the succession of cathedral projects and the influence they had on one another, not a formal competition with a single winner. These buildings developed over long periods, and their architectural forms could reflect multiple campaigns. Notre-Dame de Paris’s official architecture page says its construction began in the mid-12th century and spanned two hundred years.
Chartres and the spread of Gothic design
Chartres is an influential early-13th-century Gothic cathedral. UNESCO describes it as an authentic and complete work of religious architecture and says: “Chartres Cathedral has exercised considerable influence on the development of Gothic art in France and beyond.” UNESCO also notes that the cathedrals of Reims, Amiens, and Beauvais enriched Chartres’s fundamental design, which was imitated elsewhere in Europe.
How the cathedrals differ
| Cathedral | What stands out | Historical context |
|---|---|---|
| Chartres | Influential early-13th-century design that helped shape later Gothic work. | UNESCO identifies its influence in France and beyond. |
| Amiens | A coherent, symmetrical plan, three-tier interior elevation, structural lightness, sculpture, and stained glass. | UNESCO gives the principal construction span as 1220–1288. |
| Reims | Gothic architectural techniques and a close relationship between architecture and sculptural ornament. | Its cathedral complex is linked to the history of the French monarchy. |
| Notre-Dame de Paris | A Gothic building whose fabric reflects a long construction history. | Its official architecture page describes construction beginning in the mid-12th century and spanning two hundred years. |
Amiens: planning and light
Amiens is a strong example of the pursuit of a unified design. UNESCO praises its symmetrical plan and interior elevation, as well as its structural lightness, sculpture, and stained glass. UNESCO dates its principal construction period to 1220–1288. Amiens Métropole also reports a start in 1220 and uses 1288, when the labyrinth’s central stone was placed, as a completion marker; these are broad descriptions of the building timeline, not a precise record of uninterrupted work.

Reims: architecture, sculpture, and monarchy
Reims shows how Gothic design could carry ceremonial and political meaning as well as architectural ambition. UNESCO highlights the cathedral’s handling of 13th-century techniques and the union of architecture with sculpture. The heritage site places the cathedral complex within the history of the French monarchy.
Why the comparison matters
These cathedrals are best compared through their design and historical roles, rather than by declaring a winner. Chartres’s influence, Amiens’s coherent plan and lightness, Reims’s sculptural program and royal associations, and Notre-Dame’s long building span show how Gothic architecture developed across distinct projects.

Was there a formal competition between Gothic cathedrals?
The sources do not establish a formal contest or league table. “Contest” is an interpretive description of ambitious projects and the way one cathedral’s design could influence another.
Which cathedral influenced later Gothic design?
UNESCO says Chartres exercised considerable influence on Gothic art in France and beyond. It also notes that Reims and Amiens enriched Chartres’s fundamental design; this does not mean every later cathedral simply copied it.
