Mais qu’est-il advenu de l’esprit hippie d’antan ? Y a-t-il encore des manifestations au Colorado ? Une révolution dans les Rocheuses ? Et que sont devenus les hippies qui se réunissaient ici ?
La réponse se trouve dans l’histoire de Boulder. En 1967, l’université du Colorado a ouvert ses portes à un groupe de manifestants prônant le changement social. De ce petit rassemblement est né un mouvement qui allait remodeler non seulement Boulder, mais aussi l’État tout entier. Les manifestations contre la guerre et pour les droits civiques qui ont suivi ont galvanisé les forces progressistes du monde entier, inspirant les générations à venir.
Aujourd’hui, de nombreux aspects de cette époque grisante se retrouvent encore au Colorado. Des manifestations ont encore lieu régulièrement sur les campus universitaires et parfois dans d’autres quartiers de la ville ; l’activisme environnemental est toujours d’actualité ; et la culture hippie est bien vivante dans tout l’État. Mais peut-être plus encore que ces signes visibles, il y a une énergie qui imprègne Boulder – quelque chose qui nous rappelle à tous pourquoi cette ville était autrefois connue comme le “ground zero” du radicalisme.
