The Heirs of Genghis Khan

Jan 26, 2024 | History, Videos

The story of Genghis Khan and the rise of Mongolian Empire is one that has captivated many throughout history. Eight hundred years ago, Genghis Khan – or Temujin as he was known in his home country – was able to unite disparate nomadic tribes into a single, powerful army of 200,000 warriors and launch an unprecedented campaign of conquest. From the Pacific to the heart of Europe, from Northern Siberia to India, Iran and Turkey – no place was safe from the onslaught of Genghis Khan’s forces.

Genghis Khan’s army was small but highly disciplined and well coordinated; it employed innovative tactics such as surprise attacks on enemy flanks and rear guards before unleashing heavy cavalry assaults. After his death, civil wars broke out, followed by two centuries under Chinese rule before the creation of the Soviet bloc which brought about modernization and industrialization in Mongolia. Buildings, bridges, roads, railways lines were constructed rapidly transforming the country into a 20th century state.

However after the fall of communism in 1989, Mongolia found itself suddenly paralyzed – politically and economically – unable to cope with change. Ulan Bator has since fallen into disrepair with its inhabitants struggling to survive as best they can.

This remarkable tale is now available for everyone to enjoy via a documentary series which chronicles Genghis Khan’s ascension from humble beginnings to ruler of an empire that stretched across four continents.
