The Girl Who Became Three Boys is a documentary that will have you questioning the depths of human nature and the complex web of deception that can be woven when one feels the need to escape their true self. Gemma Barker was an 18-year-old girl who created three separate online identities in order to better manipulate and deceive two underage girls, Jessica and Alice. Through her multiple online personas, she was able to gain her victims’ trust, establish a deeper connection with them, and ultimately seduce them under false pretenses.
Gemma’s masterful manipulation of social media made it possible for her to perpetuate these false personas; by altering her writing style from one persona to the next, she was able to convince Jessica and Alice that they were conversing with different people. Each of the girls felt as if they were connecting with someone who understood them on an individual level and thus accepted Gemma’s advances more readily.
When news broke about Gemma’s elaborate scheme, it sent shockwaves through the community. Both Jessica and Alice were heartbroken and confused after discovering they had been deceived by their own friend. This documentary provides insight into the lives of both victims as they discuss their experience with frustrating candor; we also hear from other classmates who grew close to Gemma during this time period, as well as reporters who followed her trial closely.
