Physical strength, popularity, moral purity, and screen time are not enough on their own. A more useful measure asks what a character does inside her story and what she made possible outside it.
This ranking considers five things: narrative agency, psychological complexity, cultural endurance, importance to her form or genre, and adaptability. The selection crosses mythology, literature, cinema, television, comics, and video games. It is not a claim that one medium creates better heroines than another.
How the ranking works
| Criterion | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Narrative agency | Whether the heroine makes consequential choices that change the story. |
| Psychological complexity | Whether she has contradictions, flaws, difficult motives, and meaningful development. |
| Cultural endurance | Whether audiences continue to recognize, discuss, and reinterpret her across generations. |
| Formal or genre importance | Whether she expanded the possibilities of the heroine in literature, film, television, comics, or games. |
| Adaptability | Whether different writers and performers can reinterpret her without destroying the character’s central identity. |
1. Scheherazade — One Thousand and One Nights
Scheherazade is a storyteller inside the frame narrative of One Thousand and One Nights. She volunteers to marry King Shahryar, asks for her sister Dunyazad to be present, and begins a story that stops at the point of greatest suspense. The unfinished tale gives her another night. She repeats the strategy until, according to the frame narrative, she has survived 1,001 nights.
Her power is narrative control. Scheherazade manages attention, time, curiosity, and interpretation, using stories to interrupt a cycle of violence and change the king’s understanding of the world. She is one of the clearest early examples of a heroine whose intelligence, rather than beauty, inheritance, or physical force, drives the plot.

One accuracy point matters: Scheherazade did not write the whole of The Arabian Nights. She is a fictional storyteller in a collection assembled through layers of Persian tradition, Arabic transmission, and later additions. The work has no single identifiable author. Encyclopaedia Iranica provides useful background on that history.
2. Antigone — Sophocles’ Antigone
Antigone’s defining choice is simple to describe and impossible to reduce: she buries her brother Polynices despite King Creon’s order forbidding it. For her, religious and familial obligations are more important than obedience to the state.
That decision turns private mourning into public resistance. Antigone compels audiences to weigh competing claims involving conscience, political authority, gender, religion, and family loyalty. She is not merely a symbol of modern feminism, however. Her conflict is broader and more troubling than that label suggests, which is one reason later dramatists, philosophers, and political thinkers continue to return to her.
3. Elizabeth Bennet — Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice
Elizabeth Bennet’s greatest talent is interpretation. She observes social behavior, makes judgments, jokes about convention, challenges men who expect automatic deference, and refuses proposals that would require her to surrender her self-respect.

Her intelligence is also the source of her central flaw. Elizabeth is capable of serious misjudgment, particularly in her early assessments of Fitzwilliam Darcy and George Wickham. Austen’s title applies to both central characters: Elizabeth must confront her prejudice, while Darcy must confront his pride. Her development depends on self-criticism as much as defiance.
Elizabeth is not an unconstrained modern woman. She is economically vulnerable and socially restricted. Her achievement lies in maintaining judgment and personal dignity within those limits, not in pretending the limits do not exist.
4. Jane Eyre — Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre begins as an orphan and passes through childhood hardship, teaching, governess work, religious questioning, and an intense relationship with Edward Rochester. Her defining demand is moral and emotional equality, even when she has less money, status, or physical power than the people around her.
Her refusal to become Rochester’s secret partner is the novel’s clearest expression of that principle. Jane loves him, but she will not purchase love by abandoning her integrity. Her heroinehood is therefore rooted in interior authority: she repeatedly chooses difficulty over a life built on submission.

She wants love, family, faith, and belonging. The novel’s power comes from her attempt to claim those things without allowing them to make her subordinate.
5. Ellen Ripley — the Alien films
Ellen Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, becomes the central human figure of the Alien film series. In Aliens, she awakens after 57 years in hypersleep, warns others about the creatures, and returns with a military team after communication with a colony is lost. The official synopsis for the film is available from 20th Century Studios.

Ripley made skepticism, competence, and judgment under pressure central heroic qualities. She is not compelling because she is invulnerable. She is a survivor, protector, combatant, traumatized witness, and eventually a human-alien hybrid in Alien Resurrection. Each stage changes the meaning of her survival.
It is too broad to call Ripley the first female action hero. Earlier cinema included women in action-leading roles. The more defensible claim is that Ripley became one of the most influential modern science-fiction action heroines.

6. Clarice Starling — The Silence of the Lambs
Clarice Starling is a young FBI trainee investigating a serial killer in Jonathan Demme’s 1991 film. Her work depends on listening carefully, noticing details, analyzing evidence, and continuing despite institutional condescension and Hannibal Lecter’s psychological intimidation.
Her heroism is procedural rather than spectacular. Clarice does not defeat the antagonist by becoming more monstrous than he is. She maintains professional purpose while confronting fear, manipulation, and the expectations placed on a woman entering a male-dominated institution.
Lecter is the film’s most famous supporting character, but he is not its protagonist. The investigation is Clarice’s, and her decisions move the story. The Library of Congress recognized the film’s cultural importance when it added it to the National Film Registry in 2011; its film essay identifies Clarice’s investigation as the narrative focus.
7. Princess Leia Organa — Star Wars
Leia enters Star Wars as an Alderaanian princess and Rebel leader, already carrying stolen Death Star plans when the story begins. She is captured, but capture does not make her a passive damsel. She resists interrogation, evaluates Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, participates in the escape, and remains politically active after the original trilogy’s military victories.

Her title is part of her identity, but it does not define her limits. Official Star Wars material describes her role in the Rebellion, while the character’s connection to Bail Organa helps establish her political inheritance and responsibilities.
Leia’s adaptability is another strength. She can be read as a wartime leader, a diplomat, a sister, a daughter, or a model of practical resistance without losing the core of the character.
8. Wonder Woman / Diana Prince — DC Comics
Wonder Woman first appeared in All-Star Comics #8 in 1941. DC presents Diana Prince as a figure combining extraordinary abilities with a mission centered on peace, truth, justice, and equality. Her significance is not simply that she can defeat powerful enemies. It is that her strength is meant to serve compassion and peace rather than domination.
That tension gives the character more durability than power rankings can explain. Diana can be a mythic warrior, a superhero, a diplomat, or a symbol of female independence while retaining the central question of how force should be used.

Wonder Woman was not the first female superhero; women heroes appeared in comics before her. The accurate claim is that she became one of the earliest and most durable female superheroes to achieve major mainstream prominence and a long-running solo title. DC records that her own series began in 1942.
9. Jo March — Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women
Jo March is ambitious, outspoken, impatient, competitive, and determined to become a writer. Her creative ambition is not a decorative trait around a romance plot; it is the organizing force of her character.
Jo helped make artistic work and female self-definition central to a hugely influential coming-of-age story. She is valuable precisely because she is not an idealized rebel. Her temper can hurt people, and her pride can isolate her. Growth teaches her how to discipline and sustain her ambition rather than erase it.
Jo’s story should not be reduced to “she rejects marriage.” Its more durable argument is that marriage cannot be the only acceptable form of female fulfillment. Love, family, and creative purpose can coexist, but none should automatically cancel the others.

Katniss volunteers to take her younger sister’s place in the Hunger Games. That act of sacrifice becomes the foundation of a public image she does not entirely control.
Katniss begins as a survivalist, not an ideological revolutionary. Her political importance develops through the gap between her private motives and the meanings imposed on her actions by the Capitol, the rebellion, and the media. She understands that authoritarian systems turn people into symbols, and she distrusts the supposed purity of revolutionary spectacle.
She is not a straightforward chosen one. Her authority comes from sacrifice, survival skill, moral refusal, and the way other people interpret what she does. That makes her a particularly modern heroine: influential without feeling comfortable with influence.
11. Buffy Summers — Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Buffy combines the teenage coming-of-age story with supernatural action. She is a student, friend, daughter, romantic partner, and Slayer responsible for defending the world, often while adults and institutions fail to provide adequate support.
Her central conflict is the unfairness of compulsory responsibility. Buffy repeatedly wants an ordinary life, but the role demands sacrifice. Her strength is not the absence of fear or grief. It is her continuing decision to accept responsibility without allowing the Slayer identity to erase the teenager and young woman beneath it.
Calling Buffy merely a “strong female character” misses the cost of her heroism. Her story repeatedly examines loneliness, bereavement, social isolation, institutional failure, and the emotional consequences of leadership.

12. Furiosa — Mad Max: Fury Road and Furiosa
Imperator Furiosa is the strategic and emotional driving force of Mad Max: Fury Road, even though Max remains in the title. She escapes Immortan Joe’s patriarchal regime with the enslaved women and attempts to return them to safety. The prequel Furiosa expands the character’s history.
Her goal is larger than individual revenge. Furiosa is trying to create an alternative to a violent hierarchy. Her competence is accompanied by injury, trauma, physical cost, and dependence on allies, avoiding the fantasy that a capable heroine must be effortlessly self-sufficient.
The distinction between title character and principal agent matters here. Max contributes crucially, but Furiosa initiates and organizes the escape that gives Fury Road its direction.

Chihiro begins as a frightened child and becomes trapped in a spirit world after her parents are transformed. She survives not by becoming the strongest fighter in that world, but by learning how to work, remember, negotiate, show courage, and care for others.
Her development is a model of maturation rather than domination. Chihiro learns to act responsibly inside an unfamiliar and sometimes exploitative system without losing compassion. Her refusal to exploit, forget, or abandon others is not separate from her survival; it is the reason she succeeds.
Chihiro broadens the idea of an action heroine. Her victories are practical, emotional, and ethical rather than primarily physical.
14. Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow — Marvel
Natasha Romanoff begins with a history as a spy and assassin and becomes an Avenger. Marvel describes her as someone who confronts her past and redirects her skills toward protecting others.
Her defining arc is moral reconstruction. Natasha’s heroism does not depend on innocence or a clean biography. It depends on acknowledging what she has done, accepting responsibility, and deciding that her training will serve a different purpose.
She is also more than “the non-powered Avenger.” Marvel’s comics profile gives Black Widow extensive espionage and martial-arts training, along with enhanced agility, strength, speed, endurance, and slowed aging. Her appeal comes from judgment, preparation, and the difficult work of becoming trustworthy.
15. Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel — Marvel
Carol Danvers is presented by Marvel as a former Air Force major and a first-tier Avenger who becomes Captain Marvel after exposure to alien technology. Her story joins institutional experience to cosmic responsibility.
Best Value
- Incredibly detailed 7” scale figure based off the DC Multiverse

- Wonder Woman is featured in a brand new design from the mind of Todd McFarlane
- Comes with a sword, shield and a base

Carol’s major concerns are identity, control, memory, and the use of enormous power. She must recover a sense of self while deciding how to act at a scale where individual mistakes can have catastrophic consequences.
Her importance should not be reduced to power-scaling. The interesting question is not whether she is stronger than another hero. It is whether she can retain judgment and empathy while operating with extraordinary power.
Strong candidates just outside the top 15
A longer ranking would have room for many other important heroines, including Sethe from Beloved, Celie from The Color Purple, Offred/June from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hermione Granger, Lara Croft, Sarah Connor, Thelma and Louise, Mulan, Ahsoka Tano, Jyn Erso, Moana, Nausicaä, Beatrix Kiddo, Marge Gunderson, Mia Corvere, and Éowyn.
Their absence is not a judgment that they lack importance. A finite list has to distinguish between characters who are excellent and characters whose influence, formal importance, agency, complexity, and adaptability have been unusually broad.

FAQ
Who is the best heroine of all time?
Scheherazade ranks first here because she changes her world through narrative intelligence and control of attention. The ranking is editorial rather than objective, and different criteria could produce a different result.
What makes a heroine great?
The strongest heroines make consequential choices, possess psychological complexity, endure across generations, influence their genre or medium, and remain open to meaningful reinterpretation.
Is Wonder Woman the first female superhero?
No. Female comic-book heroes existed before Wonder Woman’s 1941 debut. She is more accurately described as one of the earliest and most durable female superheroes to achieve major mainstream prominence and a long-running solo title.
Was Ellen Ripley the first female action hero?
That claim is too broad and cannot be verified as a historical superlative. Ripley is one of the most influential modern science-fiction action heroines, but earlier films also featured women in leading action roles.

Why is Princess Leia included when she is captured in the first Star Wars film?
Being captured does not make Leia passive. She is already a Rebel operative carrying critical intelligence, resists interrogation, helps direct the escape, and remains a political and military leader.
Is Clarice Starling the protagonist of The Silence of the Lambs?
Yes. Clarice is the investigator whose decisions drive the film. Hannibal Lecter is its most famous supporting antagonist and an important source of information, but the story follows Clarice’s case and development.
The Bottom Line
The best heroines are not all warriors, rebels, geniuses, or saints. Scheherazade controls a story, Antigone defies a king, Elizabeth Bennet revises her judgments, Jane Eyre protects her moral equality, Ripley survives the unimaginable, and Chihiro grows through kindness and practical courage. What unites them is not a single personality or power set, but the ability to make choices that matter—and to remain interesting after the immediate crisis is over.
