Talíria takes on the military in Rio

In the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro State, there’s a councilwoman named Talíria Petrone who’s taking on the military. The army’s tough approach to drug gangs has been criticized since it took over responsibility for the city. However, Taliria’s strong stance against the military isn’t just limited to this issue. She’s also fighting for the rights of black Brazilians and battling for more accountability.

But Taliria’s activism comes with a price. She’s no stranger to receiving death threats and has even been provided with bodyguards, but she refuses to back down. In “Talíria Takes on the Military: Human Rights in Brazil,” Bianca Kopsch reports on the ongoing struggle of this courageous city councilwoman fighting for justice, equality, and human rights despite the constant threats to her life.
