“Operation Homecoming” is a powerful documentary based on the real-life experiences of soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Directed by Richard E. Robbins, the film contains interviews from veterans who recount their personal stories and also features a collection of essays, e-mails, poems, and letters compiled by the National Endowment for the Arts and published by Random House.
One of the most gripping accounts is Sangjoon Han’s fictional narrative “Aftermath,” which tells the story of an American soldier ordering an Iraqi farmer to stop before shooting indiscriminately at him. Miraculously, instead of leaving him to die from his wounds, as would be expected in such circumstances, the soldier provides medical care to the man whose organs were scattered across his body.
