Thoreau said that emergency beaten, a man must be able to leave home with nothing but the clothes on his back and feel that leaves nothing behind. Self-sufficiency is almost impossible to obtain in modern society. Did you know that there is a dream that still prevails so strongly now as it did in 1882, when Thoreau wrote Walden? Is that a return to nature. This is not the hippie-communal history-back to the landers, this is the story of what it takes to live with alternative sources of energy now – to live with nature in this modern age. This should be our permanent Walden, a life outside the network.
