My daughter and the caliphate

This gripping documentary chronicles the heart-wrenching journey of a father’s unwavering love for his daughter who has joined the terror organization Islamic State. When Leonora Messing runs off to the so-called Caliphate, her father Maik takes it upon himself to rescue her from perilous danger. For four long years, he embarks on a treacherous quest to negotiate with terrorists, confront human traffickers and take on ISIS in his desperate attempts to bring his daughter home.

Filmed over a four-year period, the documentary offers an inside look at the brutality of life in the Islamic State through the naive eyes of a  teenager. Leonora, who had been living a parallel existence online was now trapped in the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa, married to a high ranking German IS terrorist. Maik’s pursuit to save his daughter is all-consuming and emotionally fraught, as the odds look unfavorably against him. With a TV crew by his side, Maik navigates through unpredictable and often perilous terrain, while trying to maintain a sense of normalcy in his everyday life back in Germany.
