The new documentary provides a stark look at one of the most pressing issues facing Mexico today: the entrenchment of drug cartels across the country. Through the eyes of young “sicarios”, viewers gain an intimate understanding of the normative context that catalyzes the birth and life of cartels.
Beyond showing the brutality of the young hitmen’s work, the film delves deep into their interwoven lives: their struggles without families or companionship, their terrifying and often hopeless realities, and their aspirations for a better future. “Los Plebes,” as the youth are known in northern Mexico, make up the core of the documentary, illustrating the never-ending cycle of violence that consumes the next generation in drug cartel society. However, the documentary also sheds light on the resilience of the human spirit and its ability to find hope and connection even in the most dire of situations.
