The ancient Mayans were one of the most advanced civilizations of its time, ruling over a vast part of northern Guatemala from as early as 1800 B.C. Archaeologists and scientists have studied them for centuries, uncovering remarkable facts about their language, science, rituals, and general way of life. But despite all our knowledge, many mysteries remain. Until recently, answering these questions meant digging up small portions of the jungle – an arduous and destructive process.
Enter LiDAR technology: Light Detection And Ranging technology that uses GPS data, satellite images and lasers to scan a large area without destroying it. Since 2018, this advancement has revealed over 60,000 structures in the Guatemalan jungle that had long been hidden – unveiling secrets never before known about the Mayan empire and its sophisticated complex class system. Now we can begin to understand why this culture suddenly collapsed around 900AD with far greater detail than ever before.
A documentary released in 2020 dives into this new revelation and is worth watching if you are interested in exploring the secrets kept by the enigmatic Mayans. ‘Lost Kingdoms Of The Maya’ brings viewers on an amazing journey through time to discover evidence left behind by the civilization’s city-states – from massive temples to irrigation systems – showing us how they achieved their advanced engineering feats without metal or heavy equipment; only stone tools!
