The war of the stop signs in Llívia, Spain, is an intriguing tale of Crazy Borders. This small town, located within French territory, has been considered as part of Spain for centuries due to a treaty signed long ago. The conflict that ensued between France and Spain would eventually become known as the last war between the two nations – and it all began with a single stop sign.
In the 1970s, France decided to install stop signs at intersections throughout Llívia in order to bring the town up to speed with modern safety regulations. However, this decision was met with strong opposition from Spanish authorities who argued that this violated their centuries-old agreement. After a lengthy dispute between the two countries, Spain ultimately won out and the stop signs were removed from Llívia’s streets.
This fascinating story serves as an example of just how unpredictable borders can be and how even small changes can spark major diplomatic disputes. It also provides an interesting insight into the complicated nature of international relations and law. As such, it serves as an ideal source material for documentaries exploring border issues around the world.
