The Shadow Of Feeling is an incredible documentary that examines the complex and often misunderstood psychological condition of psychopathy. Though we may associate psychopaths with violent criminals, the truth is much more nuanced. It is estimated that around two percent of the world’s population are completely psychopathic, while another fifteen percent could be classified as partial psychopaths.
Though many think of psychopathy as a rare disorder, it is believed that nearly two in every one hundred children born have the potential to become adult psychopaths. However, only a small number of these individuals ever go on to commit extreme criminal acts such as murder; many will instead find success in business or politics.
In The Shadow Of Feeling follows the story of Johnathan, a 17-year-old who was labeled a psychopath at age 14 while facing trial for first degree murder. We hear from Johnathan himself as he recounts his childhood experiences and examines how parenting, genetics and society all played roles in his psychological development.
This film provides an eye-opening look into the complexities of psychopathy and gives viewers an understanding of what it truly means to be a ‘psychopath’ – not just one of violence and darkness but also one of opportunity for those willing to take it. Through Johnathan’s powerful story, we can better understand this complex condition and gain insight into what motivates these individuals to act in certain ways.
