Origami is an enigmatic medium that has fascinated minds from around the world. For some, it has become a form of art; for others, a tool to explain phenomena in science. In this documentary film, 10 incredible people are featured who have found solace and success in origami as their career path.
Between the Folds chronicles stories from three of the most renowned origami artists: a former sculptor from France who creates effigies in paper rivaling Daumier and Picasso, a hyper-realist who left his job as a physicist to explore the physics of paper folding, and an artisanal papermaker who produces impressionist works from his own creations. Additionally, the film highlights lesser-known artists with abstract concepts underpinning minimalism, deconstruction, process and empiricism. Lastly, mathematicians and scientists appear that have been awarded MacArthur Genius Awards for their computational origami research.
The film demonstrates how art and science intertwine through origami – from its most basic form of an uncut square to its complex geometric shapes created by folding techniques. A profound beauty manifests itself throughout this unique medium that can be appreciated by all viewers.
