Sofia Central Prison is a grim reminder of the harsh realities experienced by many who find themselves behind bars. With crumbling walls and insufficient infrastructure, the prison remains a wretched place for both inmates and guards alike.
The documentary series, which follows correctional staff through their daily toils, highlights not only the struggles of authority figures, but also provides an intimate view into the lives of prisoners – chronicling their experience from the newcomer’s fear-filled first night to life-long felons waiting on decisions that could mean life behind bars or something worse.

Unable to step outside of jail walls during the course of their sentence, prisoners exist in a world filled with overcrowded cells, bunks stacked 3 stories high and horrid isolation cells – leaving them with little more than 23 hours a day to pass time. The series offers insight into foreign inmates removed from their home countries, as well as mothers trying to keep up with parenting duties despite being locked away in prison.
Sofia Central Prison is a harrowing crash course in what it means to be incarcerated – offering viewers an opportunity to view this dreadful reality from a unique perspective. Through its thought-provoking content – which goes beyond simply documenting lawbreakers and investigators – this documentary encourages us to consider our own moral compass and contemplate how we might react in similar circumstances. If you’re looking for an intriguing glimpse into a world many are lucky enough never to experience first hand, then look no further: Sofia Central Prison is a must watch!
