Behind Bars: Philippines – CIW: Wardens on the Watch | World’s Toughest Prisons

Behind Bars is a gripping documentary that takes you into the heart of one of the Philippines’ most notorious women’s prisons. The Correction Officers who work here are some of the bravest individuals you could ever meet, risking their lives every day to maintain order and security within the prison walls. It is a balancing act between providing freedom to PDLs (persons deprived of liberty) and maintaining control.

The prison is home to more than a thousand prisoners, many of whom are considered some of the most dangerous in the country. The maximum-security wing houses the most high-risk inmates, and entering this area is fraught with danger. Despite the risks, Correction Officers carry no weapons, relying solely on their wits and training to maintain order.

The prison complex is vast, almost resembling its very own city. It includes large and small shops selling a variety of goods, some of which include dangerous objects like knives and scissors. The protection around the prison is of utmost importance, given that it borders directly on a residential area. Male correction officers stand guard at the perimeter to ensure no criminals escape into the nearby community.

Counting the heads of every single prisoner within the walls is crucial to ensure no one goes missing. This headcount is performed five times a day, a testament to the level of vigilance required to maintain security within the prison.

Through the documentary’s lens, viewers witness the daily struggles and challenges inmates face within this complex environment. We’re also taken on a journey with the Correction Officers and learn about their lives, their fears, and the sacrifices they make.

In summary, Behind Bars is an excellent documentary that captures the harrowing reality of life inside one of the world’s most notorious prisons. We encourage everyone to watch the documentary and see for themselves how these brave men and women manage to provide order and security within an environment that’s always on the brink of chaos.
