Amazing Quest: Stories from Suriname | Somewhere on Earth: Suriname

Lovers of nature and adventure take note! Suriname, a little-known country in the heart of the Amazon, is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural world. With endless possibilities to explore rivers, forests, and bio-diverse habitats, Suriname is one of the last frontiers of the world, waiting to be discovered.

For Fabian Vas, a buru and white descendant of Suriname’s original Dutch colonists, this stunning country is a land of exploration, wilderness, and photographic opportunities. His passion for the people and places of Suriname is evident in his commitment to documenting the beauty of this wild and little-known country.

But it’s not just humans who thrive in Suriname’s lush forests and winding rivers. Monique Pool, a true hero of her country, is a defender of the Amazon’s emblematic animal, the sloth. Her little Noah’s Ark of a yard has become a haven for the more fragile creatures of the forest, including porcupines, anteaters, and even a giant anteater. It’s thanks to her tireless efforts that she was shortlisted for CNN Hero of the Year.

For the people of Suriname, the Amazon is their lifeblood, and Rosanne Peuscher is their only hope when it comes to medical care. As the country’s only flying doctor, she crisscrosses the Amazon by plane, delivering essential medical and humanitarian care to the communities isolated in the vast tropical forest.

This stunning country is one of the greenest on earth, and yet it harbors a darker side, where illegal gold panners threaten the very fabric of Suriname’s ecosystem. It’s a complex issue, but one that’s explored in a remarkable documentary that every nature lover should watch.

So what are you waiting for? Join Fabian, Monique, Rosanne, and the many other heroes of Suriname as they explore this little-known corner of the world, and discover the majesty and magic of the Amazon for yourself.
