The 2005 World Cyber Games, held in Singapore, was one of the most memorable international gaming events yet. For five days from November 16th to 20th, the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre was filled with over 800 players from 67 different countries competing for a grand prize of $435,000. Not only did this draw an astounding 39,000 spectators to cheer on their favorite teams, but it also served as a powerful reminder of just how much esports have grown since the first WCG in 2000.
If you’d like to gain an even deeper insight into the event and its significance to esports history, then we highly recommend watching the documentary “2005 World Cyber Games: The Showcase of Professional Gaming”. Filmed during the event and released soon after, it offers viewers an exceptional glimpse into this momentous occasion.

The documentary follows several teams from around the world who had qualified for the tournament by winning regional qualifiers or earning sponsorships. These teams are shown preparing for their matches and all of the hard work that went into them – extensive training sessions and meticulously planned strategies. It also highlights some of interesting moments of competition – such as intense rivalries between different nations – as well as interviews with players and personnel involved in the event.
In addition to all this eye-catching footage and commentary about important figures in Esports culture at that time – such as Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendel (considered one of the godfathers of professional gaming) – this documentary allows us to appreciate many aspects of what make esports great today: its global reach, its ever-growing fan base and how quickly technology is advancing competitive gaming gameplay.
