Unrepentant is an eye-opening documentary that reveals an often overlooked and dark chapter of Canadian history. The film exposes the truth about Canada’s Indian Residential Schools, which were established in the 19th century with the goal of forcing assimilation onto Indigenous peoples. Through a combination of archival footage and modern interviews, Unrepentant documents the damaging legacy of these schools, including forced separation from families, physical and emotional abuse, cultural annihilation, and even genocide.
The film follows the story of Kevin Annett, a clergyman who dedicated his life to exposing these crimes. After being excommunicated from his church for speaking out against them, he continued to tirelessly research archives and uncover evidence of horrific acts committed at residential schools. By talking to former students or their family members who had been affected by these institutions, Kevin was able to document stories that had been forgotten or intentionally ignored for decades.
Unrepentant brings this dark history back into public view, calling attention to an issue that still affects many Canadians today. It is a testament to Kevin’s dedication and courage in coming forward with such difficult truths despite hostility from both religious authorities and government officials alike. This powerful documentary serves as an important reminder: if we are ever going to move towards true reconciliation between all people in Canada, we must first acknowledge our past wrongs. That’s why it’s essential for everyone to watch this important documentary and understand what happened so we can build a better future together.
