In the small town of DePere, Wisconsin, an incredible story of one person’s determination and passion has led to the creation of a local school. The individual in question is Chuck LaViolette, an educator who had a vision for creating a learning environment that was tailored to the individual needs of each student. By doing so, he sought to create a school where students could feel supported and safe while they pursued their education.

Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1921, LaViolette graduated from East High School at age 16 and went on to study music at Lawrence College. After completing his studies there, he returned to Green Bay and taught music at West High School until 1951. During this time, he made it his mission to find ways to make learning more accessible for all by creating innovative teaching strategies and engaging lessons for his students.

In 1952, LaViolette established De Pere’s first private school; now known as The Academy of Advanced Learning (AAL). With a commitment to providing quality education and fostering creative expression through its programs, AAL quickly became renowned across the country for its unique approach and success in preparing its graduates for college. From its earliest days, AAL has been focused on connecting with each student’s individual goals and strengths in order to ensure that they get the most out of their education experience.
