In July 2021, South Africa was rocked by large-scale riots and looting in its Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, leaving more than 300 dead and widespread destruction in their wake. While the unrest did not spread beyond these two provinces, it brought to the forefront long-standing issues of inequality and racial justice in South Africa.
Unfortunately, decades of oppressive socio-economic policies have left lasting scars on South African society. A lack of opportunity for those living in poorer areas has exacerbated poverty and unemployment among Black citizens. These conditions were further worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a gradual buildup of frustration culminating in the July riots.
Amidst this dire situation, a group of brave neighbourhood volunteers has come together with an inspiring message of hope. Their documentary film, titled ‘The Power of Unity’, chronicles their incredible journey from ordinary citizens to volunteer activists working hard to rebuild their communities.
