Lago di Braies – Pragser Wildsee is a beautiful alpine lake in the Dolomites, situated at the foot of the Croda del Becco peak, which forms its picturesque backdrop. Known as one of the most popular destinations in South Tyrol, it attracts visitors from all over the world with its stunning views and unique experiences. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or an adventure-filled holiday, there are plenty of reasons to add this destination to your list. Here are 9 things you should know about Lago di Braies – Pragser Wildsee before you visit:
1. It’s a great spot for both summer and winter vacations.
In summer months, enjoy the warm colors of the lake and revel in its beauty with fewer tourists around. If you’re looking for a fairytale experience, however, plan your trip during wintertime when snow blankets the area – just be prepared for potential road closures due to bad weather conditions.

Just look for that iconic wooden hut seen in many photos of the lake where boat rental services are available from mid-May to October end. According to this travel guide, the cost is €19 for 30 minutes and €29 for 1 hour – perfect if you want to explore further out into the lake.

3. Accommodation options abound here!
The Valle di Braies (Pragser Tal) offers great accommodation opportunities close by; from there it’s only a short walk to not just Lago di Braies but also iconic Tre Cime peaks, Cadini massifs and Pratto Piazza plateaus too! Some budget friendly accommodation options include Klaudehof (apartments), Steinwandterhof (2-4 bedded rooms), Stegerhof (apartments) and Garni Bergblick (2-bed rooms).
4. Refreshments and restaurants abound too!
On top of great accommodation, there are plenty places around the lake where you can grab some refreshments or have a bite to eat including a fast food restaurant near Lago di Braies entrance as well as restaurants at Pragser Wildsee Hotel or bistro with outdoor seating just behind it. For an authentic local experience though, head up Seekofel where Rifugio Biella serves up tasty meals and drinks or hike towards Malga Foresta — they prepare great meals using their own ingredients!
5. Swimming isn’t allowed here though…
As much as dauntingly beautiful Lago di Braies may look like it would make for an excellent dip spot during hot summer days – alas no – swimming isn’t allowed according to South Tyrol Tourist Board regulations so sadly you will need to resort to other cooling methods such as drinking plenty of water or even practicing “hardening” with Wim Hof method.

6 . It’s also perfect for hikes!
Lago di Braies forms part of Alta Via n°1 delle Dolomites — a 150 km long route across Dolomites finishing in Belluno Veneto — but if you don’t have enough time then perhaps do shorter hikes instead; like one around 3 km circuit around Lake itself which will take about 1½ hours depending on how often you stop to take pictures or simply admire breathtaking surrounding scenery; starting from western shore path which is ideal even for strollers but more experienced hikers could opt instead east shore path which is quite challenging yet offering stunning views as reward; either way don’t forget go clockwise otherwise paths might cross each other!. There’s also 4½ km circuit hike leading towards Malga Foresta hut with fantastic meal waiting at end plus 14km circuit hike leading up Croda del Beco peak — both being equally worth while experiences!.

7 . Admire amazing wildlife here !
Lago Di Braies is located within Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park — home to variety plant species and amazing wildlife like lynxes, ibexes, Golden Eagles, Woodcocks, Marmots, groundhogs etc … . Take time when hiking around nature park observe closely these creatures without disturbing them; they truly worth seeing ! .
8 . Try traditional dishes while here !
The region is full delicious local dishes thanks mix Italian, Austrian & German influences ; hence when planning visit make sure try out few traditional delicacies such original Speck pancetta smoked ham made locally, Knödels dumplings, Schüttelbrot rye bread crispy outside soft inside plus famous Kastanienknödels chestnut dumplings which work either side dish dessert!.
