Without the original magazine item, an archived issue, or a reliable interview about the prop, it would be misleading to claim a specific date, cover subject, article, or “true story.”
What is known about the PEOPLE issue?
No reliable account located for this topic identifies the issue or confirms that the film’s magazine prop corresponds to a particular real PEOPLE story. The word “exclusive” and the phrase “true story” should therefore be treated as part of the question, not as established facts.
A University of Vermont library catalog lists National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation as a DVD and describes its story and comic set pieces. That record documents a DVD-format listing; it does not identify the magazine prop or establish current retailer stock. University of Vermont library catalog.
What would establish its real-world origin?
A defensible identification would need a primary source—such as the original PEOPLE article or an archived issue—or a reliable interview that directly discusses the magazine prop. Until one of those sources connects the film’s prop to a real issue, details about its date, cover, contents, or inspiration remain unconfirmed.
