The accessible source confirms one placement: Taylor Swift’s “Is It Over Now?” at No. 5. It does not verify the complete Top 25 or identify Sheffield’s No. 1 song.
What the available record confirms
A secondary reference attributes a personal year-end Top 25 to Rolling Stone critic Rob Sheffield and dates its publication to December 30, 2023. That reference places Taylor Swift’s “Is It Over Now?” at No. 5. It does not provide reliable confirmation of the other 24 positions or Sheffield’s explanations for his choices.
This is a critic’s selection, not a chart ranking or consensus list. The available evidence does not establish Sheffield’s selection criteria or methodology.
Why another Rolling Stone list can cause confusion
Rolling Stone Germany published a separate 100-song ranking on December 23, 2023, described as a list selected by US Rolling Stone colleagues. That editorial ranking is distinct from Sheffield’s individual Top 25; its entries should not be used to fill gaps in his list. Rolling Stone Germany’s 100 best songs of 2023.

What cannot be confirmed
- The full order of Sheffield’s 25 songs.
- His No. 1 song.
- Song-by-song commentary or quotations from his article.
The accessible secondary reference supports the date and the No. 5 placement, but the original Rolling Stone article was not available for verification. Without it or another reliable source directly documenting the remaining entries, presenting a complete ranking would risk attributing songs or commentary to Sheffield incorrectly.
