Euphoria has scenes that are deliberately difficult to watch, but “almost went too far” is a judgment, not an official ranking. The five season-one moments below are documented in contemporary reporting; they involve nudity, sexual exploitation, coercion, self-harm and non-consensual image-sharing. Spoilers follow. Content note: this article discusses those subjects without graphic detail.
How these scenes made the list
The original title promises 20 scenes, but the available episode-level reporting substantiates five specific examples from the first season—not a defensible 20-scene ranking across the series. This list is therefore limited to those five, selected for the boundaries they cross and the consequences for the characters. It is not an objective measure of what is “too far,” nor a ranking of every season.
The Guardian’s 2019 account describes Euphoria as a series about high-school students navigating drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love and friendship. Its explicit material is intended for mature audiences; the characters’ age does not make the show a guide to typical teenage experience. The Guardian’s 2019 coverage is the source for the scenes below and reflects reactions to the show’s first season.
Five Euphoria scenes that push boundaries
1. Nate surrounded by naked boys (season one, episode two)
A slow-motion locker-room sequence surrounds Nate with dozens of naked boys. The Guardian reported that viewers counted 30 penises and that the sequence was said to pay homage to Brian De Palma’s Carrie. The report also said 80 had originally been planned; that is a reported production intention, not an independently verified production statistic. The controversy is not just the scene’s explicitness: it places nudity around high-school characters in a deliberately overwhelming image.

2. Jules’s online hookup (pilot)
Jules, a transgender teenager, meets an adult man through an online hookup. The Guardian characterized the encounter as statutory rape. Its shock comes from the exploitation of a minor, not from anything viewers should be invited to treat as titillating. The scene establishes a serious imbalance of age and power.
3. McKay chokes Cassie during sex (pilot)
During sex, McKay chokes Cassie after seeing her in a sex tape and assuming that she wants the same treatment. That assumption is not evidence of consent. The moment is disturbing because it shows him importing expectations from a recording into an intimate encounter without establishing that Cassie agreed to what he does.

4. Jules cuts her arm at a party
After Nate verbally attacks her, Jules slices her arm with a kitchen knife at a party. The act makes her distress visible, but it is not a spectacle to celebrate: the scene connects an immediate emotional crisis with self-harm. The Guardian also reported that Hunter Schafer discussed the emotional demands of filming the party scene.
5. Kat’s sexual video is shared around school
A video of Kat’s first sexual encounter is filmed and circulated among students before it is uploaded to a porn site. The central violation is the non-consensual distribution of intimate material. The scene’s impact lies in the loss of control and the way the sharing follows Kat through school—not in the video as an explicit image.

Why the show’s intensity is open to debate
In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, creator and writer Sam Levinson said, “For better or worse, a lot of it comes from my own experiences with anxiety and addiction.” He also said he wanted to depict “the anxiety of being young and the insecurities and unsureness of relationships” in a way he felt viewers had not seen before. That context helps explain the show’s interest in difficult emotions; it does not settle whether any particular scene is effective or gratuitous.
The Guardian also quoted Zendaya cautioning that the show was intended for mature audiences and could be hard to watch. The distinction matters: attention to teenage characters does not mean the series is aimed at younger viewers or that its characters represent teenagers generally.

Euphoria premiered in 2019. HBO/WBD’s pressroom describes season three as an eight-episode season scheduled to debut on April 12, 2026; the Associated Press also reported in April 2026 that the series was returning for a third season. The sources cited here do not establish scene-by-scene details for that season, so none are added to this list. HBO/WBD’s Euphoria pressroom provides official series and season information.
The series also has two special episodes, produced under COVID-19 guidelines. HBO/WBD described the first, Trouble Don’t Last Always, as following Rue after a relapse and taking place at Christmas. These specials are distinct from the numbered regular seasons, so they should not be silently counted as season episodes. HBO/WBD’s announcement of the special episodes gives that context.

For historical scale, HBO/WBD reported in its February 2022 season-three renewal announcement that the season-two premiere had more than 14 million viewers across platforms at the time, compared with an average of 6.6 million viewers per season-one episode. Those are figures from that announcement, not current audience totals. HBO/WBD’s 2022 renewal announcement states the comparison.
