Gabe Ortis was voted out at the nine-player stage of Survivor 47, and his own account of that exit centers on a Shot in the Dark he never got to use. He had helped persuade the group to trade their Shot in the Dark chances for rice, which left him without one when Tribal Council arrived. His account comes from a post-elimination interview published by Yahoo on November 21, 2024, not from an official episode guide, so this recap separates what he says happened from what can be confirmed.

What the interview establishes

Ortis describes himself as voted out at nine players. The interview identifies him as a 26-year-old Charm City radio host and presents his version of the vote, his relationships inside the tribe, and his decision-making around the Shot in the Dark. Three points come directly from that interview:

  • He was eliminated at the nine-player stage.
  • He was unable to use a Shot in the Dark at Tribal Council because the group had traded those chances for rice, a trade he says he helped push.
  • He said he consistently preferred keeping his vote to using a Shot in the Dark.

The interview does not give the exact Tribal Council tally, and this article does not infer one. It also does not establish every event shown on screen, so the episode-level sequence below is limited to what Ortis described.

The Shot in the Dark and the rice trade

In the interview, a Shot in the Dark is the option Ortis compares against his vote. He frames using one as giving up the vote he would otherwise cast, which is why he calls the choice a question of what to value more. When the group agreed to trade their Shot in the Dark chances for rice, Ortis was on the side of that deal, and the result was that he had no Shot available at Tribal Council.

That is the central irony of his account. The trade he helped bring about removed the one tool that might have changed his position, and his interview suggests he did not regard that outcome as an accident of the moment. Readers should treat this as his retrospective reading of the decision, since the interview does not show how each player weighed the offer at the time.

Why he kept his vote

Asked whether he would have used the Shot in the Dark, Ortis answered without hesitation:

“Never. I always, always, always, always value having my vote in the game more than anything else.”

This is a statement about his priorities, not a claim about what every player should do. It also explains why the rice trade did not look like a loss to him in the moment: keeping a vote in the game was his main concern, even though it left him with fewer options later.

The nine-player bottleneck

Ortis describes the nine-player vote as a bottleneck. He estimated his own perceived risk at roughly 60 percent, compared with 40 percent for Genevieve, in terms of who he expected might be targeted. These figures are his recollection of his expectations at the time. They are not measured probabilities, and they should not be read as a vote statistic.

His close ally Sue Smey, according to the interview, did not vote against him. That detail matters because it shows he was not voted out by his closest partner, but the interview does not establish the full distribution of votes, so the outcome beyond that point rests on his account alone.

Caroline Vidmar and the question of inclusion

Ortis links the strain in his relationship with Caroline Vidmar to how long he took to share his plans with her. By his account, others had discussed voting out Genevieve with Caroline before he did. He says that gap gave Caroline reason to question whether she was still part of his thinking.

This is the clearest example in the interview of how communication timing, rather than a single vote, affected a relationship. It is also presented as Ortis’s own explanation after the fact, and Caroline’s perspective is not part of the interview excerpt.

The Tuku options he considered

The interview says Ortis weighed two routes forward for the Tuku group. One was keeping the group together. The other was becoming the Tuku player who crossed tribal lines. Both are his stated strategic thinking, not plans confirmed as shared by the other players, and the interview does not show how far either option was discussed with the group.

What remains unverified

  • The exact episode number and air date are not established by the interview.
  • The challenge sequence and other episode events are not set out in the interview.
  • The full Tribal Council vote tally is not stated.
  • Caroline Vidmar’s and Genevieve’s accounts are not included.

Readers who want a complete chronology of the episode should check an official CBS listing or the episode itself, then compare it with Ortis’s account here.
