There is no verifiable list of ten female celebrities whom people believed were born male, and this article does not offer one. The headline makes two claims at once: that ten specific people are identifiable, and that the public held a particular belief about each of them. Reliable sources support neither claim as a group. What they do support is narrower and more useful: a small number of women in entertainment have spoken publicly about being transgender, or about the sex assigned to them at birth. This article covers those documented accounts, what each source actually establishes, and how to judge claims that go further.
Why the headline’s premise does not hold
The phrase “people thought” is a claim about other people’s beliefs. Making it stand up requires evidence of what a identifiable group believed, when, and about which person. A subject’s own biography or coming-out interview can tell you what that person has said about their life. It cannot prove what strangers, fans, or commentators assumed before that statement was made.

A ten-name list has the same problem. Each name needs its own source, and each source has to support its inclusion for a stated reason. Without that, the number is decoration. Reliable documentation for the individuals below exists, but it does not extend to a roster of ten.
Gender identity and sex assigned at birth are different things
Gender identity is a person’s own understanding of their gender. Sex assigned at birth is the sex recorded for a person at or shortly after birth, usually based on external anatomy. For many people the two match. For transgender people they do not, and the two concepts should be kept apart in writing.

A biography may state a person’s assigned sex while an interview describes their identity. Use the terms the person has used for themselves, and where the record documents it, prefer “transgender woman” and “assigned male at birth.”
Public figures with documented accounts
The three cases below are examples drawn from reviewed sources. They are not a complete or ranked list of transgender women in entertainment.
Rank #2
Laverne Cox
Cox is an actor and advocate. The National Women’s History Museum’s biography describes her as assigned male at birth and recounts her career and advocacy work. Hulu’s press biography describes her as an openly transgender actor and summarizes milestones in her career. In a 2014 interview with TIME, she discussed gender identity and sex assigned at birth in her own words. Those three sources cover different things: a historical biography, a studio’s promotional description, and the subject’s own interview. Together they document her public account without any need to speculate.
Caitlyn Jenner
Jenner’s account of her public transition comes from her own 2015 interview with TIME, in which she discussed deciding to come out as transgender. That interview is the right source for her reasoning and timeline as she described them. It does not show what the public believed about her earlier, and it should not be used that way.
Rank #3
Hunter Schafer
The Associated Press reported in February 2025 on Schafer’s public account that a passport had been issued to her with a male gender marker. The story is about a legal document and the policy context around it. It does not establish what people generally thought of her, and it should not be read as a verdict on anyone’s assumptions. Its value for a reader is as a dated record of a documentation dispute, not as evidence of a belief held by the public.
| Person | What the source documents | Source and date | Subject’s own public account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laverne Cox | Assigned male at birth; openly transgender actor; career and advocacy | National Women’s History Museum biography; Hulu press biography; TIME interview (2014) | Discussed gender identity and sex assigned at birth in a 2014 TIME interview |
| Caitlyn Jenner | Decision to come out as transgender | TIME interview (2015) | Described her decision to come out as transgender in a 2015 TIME interview |
| Hunter Schafer | Passport issued with a male gender marker; the document and the policy context | Associated Press report (February 2025) | Publicly described the passport issue; the AP report does not establish what the public believed about her |
How to judge a “people thought” claim
When you see a claim that a celebrity was widely believed to have been born a particular sex, check it against the following:
Rank #4
- Who is “people”? A named, dated source should say who held the belief. An unattributed “everyone knew” is not evidence.
- Has the subject spoken? A person’s own interview or biography is the primary source for their gender identity and assigned sex.
- What is the evidence? Appearance, voice, old photographs, and online rumor do not establish identity or birth history. Treat them as speculation.
- What is the date? A later public statement does not prove what anyone believed before it was made.
- Which terms apply? Use the subject’s name and pronouns, and use “transgender woman” or “assigned male at birth” only where a reliable source supports the wording.
What to leave out
Articles on this topic often drift into bodies, medical histories, and judgments about how feminine someone looks. None of that is necessary to answer the question, and much of it is not public. Stay with what the subject has said publicly, what a reliable source documents, and the career context that made the person visible. Anything beyond that is speculation, and it should not appear in print.
