The finale turns a rescue into a collision between two versions of Mark, each with a claim on a life the other cannot fully share.
What happens in “Cold Harbor”?
Harmony Cobel explains that Mark’s completed files are connected to Gemma’s mind and temperaments. In her account, the 25th and final file, Cold Harbor, would complete Lumon’s project. That is Cobel’s explanation within the story, not a full account of what Lumon has achieved or intends.

Before the final test, Mark’s outie records a message for his innie. The exchange makes their competing stakes plain: the outie wants help rescuing Gemma, while the innie questions whether that plan protects his existence—or the existence of the other innies. The outie raises reintegration, but cannot explain how it would make the two Marks one.
Dylan returns after his innie had quit. A letter from Dylan’s outie thanks him and gives him permission to leave, while also explaining that the innie’s confidence gives the outie hope. The moment offers a quieter version of the finale’s central problem: whether one half of a severed person can recognize the other as someone with feelings and interests of their own.
#1 Best Overall
What is the Cold Harbor test?
Mark and Helly finish the file, and the episode takes Gemma to the testing floor. She is ordered to disassemble a baby crib and does so without a visible emotional reaction. That chilling image suggests that Lumon is trying to produce a severed state without emotion. It is a reading of what the scene shows, not a confirmed technical explanation of the project.
The sequence links Mark’s work to Gemma’s experience, but it does not settle exactly how the files operate or what Cold Harbor would mean beyond Cobel’s account. The test’s emotional force comes from seeing Gemma treated as the subject of an experiment—and from Mark’s dawning proximity to her.

Why does Mark leave Gemma?
Mark’s outie reaches Gemma and gets her out of the Cold Harbor room. At the elevator, the switch restores their innie states: Gemma becomes Ms. Casey, and Mark becomes Mark S. At the stairwell, Gemma changes back and calls for Mark to follow her.
Instead, Mark S. runs with Helly. The choice is painful because the two Marks do not share the same lived relationship to Gemma. The outie is trying to recover his wife; the innie has his own experience, attachments and fear of being erased. For him, going with Helly is not simply refusing a rescue. It is choosing the relationship and life that are his.

The episode does not make that decision easy or resolve the moral conflict. Gemma is left at the stairwell, and Mark’s choice places his own desire for a future against the outie’s urgent effort to bring her home.
What does the finale leave unresolved?
The closing image is an escape in motion, not a completed escape. The episode does not show whether Mark and Helly get away, what happens to Gemma, or whether Lumon can be stopped. It also leaves open whether the two Marks can ever become one through reintegration—or whether either can survive the other’s choices.
Rank #4
Those unanswered questions give the ending its sting. Mark’s innie has acted with agency, but that agency does not erase Gemma’s abandonment or settle what the outie will do next. Season three has to reckon with the consequences of a choice made at the last possible moment.

The finale makes the show’s split identity premise immediate and personal: the same body reaches the door, but the person who steps into the decision is not the one who began the rescue. Mark’s innie is not merely an obstacle between the outie and Gemma. He is a person whose brief life has become meaningful to him, and whose choice therefore carries real cost.

Dylan’s letter provides a counterpoint. His outie acknowledges his innie’s confidence and gives him permission to quit, however imperfectly the two halves understand one another. Mark’s situation is more desperate: the outie asks for help, but the innie must decide whether to surrender a future he has only just begun to claim.
Germain Lussier’s io9/Gizmodo recap of “Cold Harbor,” published March 21, 2025, recounts the finale’s sequence and reads the crib test as part of a project to create an emotionless severed state. The episode’s events support the tension at the heart of that interpretation, but they do not provide a final explanation of Lumon’s technology or the meaning of Mark’s choice.
