Three anime clearly fit the brief: a lead character whose missing memories are the premise or the engine of the plot. They are Amnesia, Angel Beats!, and Dusk Maiden of Amnesia. Two more titles are often recommended for this trope, but as of October 2026 we have not been able to check their official synopses, so they appear below as unconfirmed leads rather than ranked picks. We have not filled the list to ten, because a padded list would include shows where memory loss is a side detail or a late twist.
How we decided what counts
A title qualifies when the lead’s lost memories shape what the story is about, not when a character simply forgets something once. We judged each show on five points:

- Who loses memory: the protagonist, or only a supporting character.
- Timing: whether the loss is present from the first episode or introduced later.
- Centrality: whether the loss is the premise, a recurring device, or a short arc.
- Genre and tone: mystery, supernatural drama, romance, or ensemble comedy-drama.
- Spoiler risk: whether describing the fit would reveal a major turn.
These are editorial criteria, not ratings. They tell you how a show’s memory theme works, not how good the show is.
Confirmed picks
Each of the three titles below is supported by an official or platform synopsis. Where a source is a streaming platform listing rather than the studio’s own site, we say so.

Amnesia
This is the most direct match to the trope. According to the official anime synopsis, the heroine wakes in an unfamiliar café, recognizes no one, and is told by a spirit named Orion that she has lost all memories from before August 1. The date boundary gives the story a concrete starting question: what happened before that day, and why does she not remember it? The official synopsis does not state a release year, so check the studio or distributor page for the production details you need.
Genre sits closest to supernatural mystery, with a light romantic thread. Memory loss is present from the opening, and it stays central because the identity question drives each episode.
Rank #2
Angel Beats!
The official series synopsis describes the protagonist, Otonashi, as having no memory of his life before death. He is also confused about the afterlife school he finds himself in. The amnesia is present from the start, but the show’s premise is an afterlife ensemble story rather than a single identity mystery. Memories of his past return gradually, and a later episode’s official synopsis describes him encountering the continuation of those memories in a dream. This fits the trope, but readers expecting a straight amnesia mystery should know that the emotional focus is spread across the whole cast.
Genre and tone: supernatural drama with comedic school-life elements and a strong ensemble cast.

- Elfen Lied Complete Collection [Blu-Ray]
Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
The Prime Video listing describes Yuuko as a ghost who has no memory of her own death. Episode summaries describe painful memories being removed and later recovered, which makes memory part of both the ghost mystery and the developing relationship. The source is a streaming platform listing, not the production’s official site, so treat the wording as the platform’s description. Its memory mechanism is different from ordinary personal amnesia: the lost material is tied to a ghost’s unfinished past, not to a head injury or trauma in the usual sense.
Genre and tone: romance and supernatural drama. The memory theme is integral rather than a passing device.

Unconfirmed leads
These two titles are frequently recommended for this trope, but we could not verify their protagonists, the timing of memory loss, or how central it is to the plot against an official synopsis. We list them so readers can look them up, and we do not rank them.
Kaiba
Reader recommendations describe the protagonist as trying to learn who they are after losing their memories, which would make identity the central question. We have not confirmed this against an official or distributor synopsis, so check the rights-holder’s page before relying on it.

Golden Time
Reader discussions describe the lead’s memory loss as a major story element in a romance. That is a plausible match, but it is not yet confirmed. Check the official synopsis to see whether the memory loss is the premise or a later arc, since a romance can use amnesia in very different ways.

Choosing by what you want
- If you want a single identity puzzle: start with Amnesia. Its date boundary sets up the question immediately.
- If you want a memory theme inside a larger ensemble: Angel Beats! spreads the emotional weight across its cast.
- If you want romance with a ghost’s past at its center: Dusk Maiden of Amnesia makes memory part of the relationship itself.
Where to watch
We have not established current regional streaming availability for any of these titles. Availability changes by country and by season, so check the official distributor pages or your local streaming service directly. The Prime Video listing for Dusk Maiden of Amnesia may show different details depending on your region.
Tropes like this also reward spoiler care. If you are sharing a list, keep memory-recovery details out of headings and short blurbs, because a loss that is revealed late is often the point of the story.
