Season 13 of Chicago Fire, as showrunner Andrea Newman describes it, is about characters’ pasts returning to shape their present. “Haunted” is her shorthand for that. It describes the season’s storylines rather than any single episode, and it is a metaphor, not a supernatural premise.
What “haunted” means for season 13
Newman’s description came in an interview reported by Collider and republished on Medium, and it is the clearest statement of the season’s approach:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |

“We kept feeling like this is haunted season 13. It’s kind of like people’s past ghosts coming back.”
In practice, relationships and family history from earlier seasons resurface and affect what characters decide now. The interview previews arcs. It does not promise that every episode carries the same mood, so read “haunted” as the season’s theme rather than a tone guarantee.

The main story threads
Three storylines are identified in the reporting as the clearest examples of the theme.
Severide and his newly revealed half-brother
The season builds on a season 12 revelation: Jack Damon is Severide’s half-brother. That connection pulls the character back into a complicated history with his father, Benny Severide. Newman is the source of the description of this relationship as complicated.
Violet, Evan Hawkins and an earlier relationship
Violet’s storyline looks back to her relationship with Evan Hawkins. TVLine’s season 13 premiere interview, which is available here, ties Violet’s arc to the season’s past-focused theme.
Carver’s personal and family history
Carver is described as carrying his own personal and family history into his relationship with Violet. The same TVLine interview associates his storyline with the season’s theme, placing it alongside Violet’s.

The season’s biggest structural change is leadership. Dom Pascal takes over as chief of Firehouse 51 after Wallace Boden leaves the role. Newman described Pascal’s arrival as a change that would draw different reactions from the firehouse’s characters.
Boden’s influence, however, is not written out. Newman said of the transition:
“Boden’s presence is still so much a part of the show, and it always will be, because he was so formative in the way that he put this group together and the way he raised this family up.”
What the 2024 reporting establishes
- The season 13 premiere was scheduled for September 25, 2024, on NBC. Yahoo’s republication of the Entertainment Weekly story, available here, dates Newman’s interview to September 12, 2024.
- The Newman quotes come from that reported interview. Their punctuation follows the published text; the original interview is the place to check exact wording.
- The coverage is showrunner commentary. It includes no ratings, audience, cast, or episode-count figures, and none should be inferred from it.
Where to watch and what to check
The September 2024 coverage said older seasons could be caught up on Peacock. That described the service at the time of publication. The sources do not confirm current US streaming availability for season 13 or Peacock’s subscription terms, and availability varies by region and date. Check NBC’s schedule or your streaming provider directly before planning to watch.
