The “officially ranked” list in this title is an editorial ranking, not an official Marvel classification. It was published by CBR in 2018 and credited to Sage Ashford. Two of its positions can be confirmed from secondary references: Madame Masque at #5 and Ghost at #7. We could not verify the other eighteen names, the descriptions attached to them, or the criteria the writer used, so this guide explains what is established and how to check the rest yourself.
What “officially ranked” means here
The phrase is headline framing. Marvel does not publish a ranked list of Iron Man’s deadliest enemies, and nothing we found shows that the CBR article was endorsed by the publisher. Treat the list as one writer’s judgment, published on a comics news and features site, and dated to 2018. Lists of this kind are useful for discussion, but they reflect the ranking logic of the person who wrote them.
What can be confirmed
Secondary character references tie the 2018 CBR ranking to Sage Ashford and support two placements. They are summaries, not the original article, so the table below records only what those references state.
| Position | Villain | What is confirmed | What is not confirmed |
|---|---|---|---|
| #5 | Madame Masque | Placed fifth in the CBR ranking by Sage Ashford | The write-up, the reasoning for the placement, and the character details the article gave |
| #7 | Ghost | Placed seventh in the same ranking; secondary references describe Ghost’s technology as allowing invisibility or intangibility, but not both at the same time, along with hacking electronic systems and interfering with signals | Whether the original article makes these same points, and how it weighs them against the other entries |
The ability details for Ghost are the only character-level description we could match to the ranking, and they come from a secondary summary. If you cite them, cite the original CBR article once you have checked it.

How to judge a villain ranking
A ranking of “deadliest” villains needs a stated standard. Without one, the order can reflect popularity, storyline importance or personal taste. These four axes are a reasonable framework for evaluating any list of this kind, including this one. They are proposed criteria, not confirmed as the criteria CBR used.
- Threat to Tony Stark: how directly the villain targets Stark himself, as opposed to the wider world or other heroes.
- Ability to defeat or bypass the armor: whether the villain has a method that works against Iron Man’s suit, such as disabling systems, evading sensors or getting past defenses.
- Access to resources or organizations: whether the villain commands money, personnel or technology that multiplies their danger.
- Scale of past attacks: the size and consequences of the villain’s documented actions against Stark or the public.
Applying these axes to Ghost and Madame Masque is a useful exercise, but it is your own assessment. The ranking itself does not establish that these criteria were applied.

Limits of what we could establish
- The full twenty-entry order is not verified here. Do not rely on any unlabelled version of the list.
- We did not confirm whether CBR later revised the article. It is more than seven years old, so check the page for an update note.
- No statistics or direct quotations from the article were found, so the placements are ordinal rankings, not measurements.
How to check the full list yourself
- Search CBR’s site for the 2018 article titled “Iron Man: His 20 Deadliest Villains, Officially Ranked” and confirm the byline is Sage Ashford.
- Check the publication date and any “updated” note on the page, so you cite the version you read.
- Confirm the #5 and #7 entries match the ones listed above.
- For each character the article describes, check the powers and history against Marvel’s official character pages before repeating them.
- If the article names a specific comic issue as evidence, find that issue in a catalog or store listing and read the scene directly.
Once you have the original article, you can compare its order against the four axes above and decide whether its ranking holds up for your own purposes.
