IMDb does not publish an official top ten of 2000s TV shows. The decade list most often surfaced for this topic is a user-created IMDb community list covering series that started between 2000 and 2009. Its opening entries, as shown in a 2026 search excerpt, are Breaking Bad, The Wire, Mad Men, and The Office. The rest of that list and the date its order was captured are not established here, so the entries below are a verified starting point, not a complete ranking.
What “ranked by IMDb” can mean for a decade list
The phrase covers three different things, and they produce different orders:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 |
|
Ed, Edd n Eddy: The Complete Series (DVD) | $28.99 | Buy on Amazon |
| 2 |
|
Sesame Street: Old School Volume 1 (1969 - 1974) [DVD] | $15.54 | Buy on Amazon |
| 3 |
|
Little Nicky (DVD) (Widescreen) (English Only) | $7.99 | Buy on Amazon |
| 4 |
|
Two Guys and a Girl: The Complete Series [DVD] | $26.49 | Buy on Amazon |
| 5 |
|
Conjuring Universe (6-Film Collection) (DVD) | $17.82 | Buy on Amazon |
- IMDb’s official charts. IMDb’s Top 250 TV chart is an all-time chart. It is not filtered by decade, so it cannot tell you which 2000s shows rank highest.
- User-created lists. IMDb members can build lists of titles. A list titled “Best TV Series of 2000s” describes its scope as series starting between 2000 and 2009. IMDb does not review or verify these lists, and its order should not be presented as an official IMDb ranking.
- A filtered search you run yourself. You can apply your own premiere-date range, sort by a metric you choose, and record the results on the day you check them. This is the only route that gives you a ranking you can reproduce.
The opening entries in the community list
The search excerpt shows the first four positions of the community list. The figures are the ratings and user-rating counts displayed at capture, rounded as shown:
| Position in excerpt | Title | IMDb rating shown | User ratings shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Breaking Bad | 9.5 | About 2.7 million |
| 2 | The Wire | 9.3 | About 440,000 |
| 3 | Mad Men | 8.7 | About 295,000 |
| 4 | The Office | 9.0 | About 853,000 |
Two points matter when you read this table. First, the order does not follow the rating. Mad Men (8.7) sits above The Office (9.0), so the community list is ordering by something other than the displayed rating alone. The excerpt does not say what that something is. Second, the excerpt does not label which version of The Office is meant. The product information in the next section refers to the U.S. series with nine seasons, and that is the only version this evidence describes.

How IMDb’s Top 250 formula weights ratings
IMDb describes its Top 250 TV chart as using a formula that accounts for both the value of ratings and the number of user ratings. It does not work as a simple average of scores, and a title’s position depends on how many people have rated it as well as what they gave it.
The same description sets eligibility for a TV series at a minimum of 10,000 user ratings and at least five aired episodes. These thresholds belong to the all-time Top 250 chart. They are not a published rule for any 2000s list, and a community list may apply different inclusion criteria.
How to build a reproducible 2000s ranking on IMDb
If you need a ranking you can check yourself, use IMDb’s advanced title search and record your settings. Menu labels change, so use the closest equivalent if a name below differs.
- Open IMDb’s advanced title search.
- Set the title type to TV series.
- Set the release date range to 1 January 2000 through 31 December 2009. Confirm each title’s first-aired date on its own page, because a series’ listed date may not match the date you expect.
- Set a minimum number of user ratings. Using 10,000 matches the Top 250 threshold, but you can choose a lower figure if you state it.
- Optionally set a minimum of five episodes to match the Top 250 episode rule.
- Sort by IMDb rating, then check the number of votes next to each title.
- Write down the date, every filter, and each title’s rating and vote count. Save the list, because the figures move as people vote.
A list built this way answers a different question from the community list. It shows what the filter returns on the day you ran it, not what a particular curator chose.

What the figures do and do not tell you
- Ratings are a snapshot. The numbers above come from a 2026 excerpt with no exact capture date. Check current values before you cite them.
- Vote counts change the picture. A 9.5 from about 2.7 million ratings and an 8.7 from about 295,000 ratings are not directly comparable as measures of quality, and the community list’s order does not explain how it treats that difference.
- Popularity and quality are different. A high rating from a large audience says how viewers rated a show on IMDb. It does not establish critical or cultural standing.
Where to own The Office
Universal Pictures At Home lists The Office: The Complete Series on DVD and Blu-ray and states that the set includes all nine seasons. Retailer availability and pricing were not verified for this article. Physical-edition details are established for this show only; they do not indicate that other titles from the 2000s have comparable releases.
