But the January 31, 2025 report behind the speculation also says Punk later insisted he was not leaving clues and described Lee as at home. It does not establish that she was booked or planned to appear.
What did CM Punk say about a surprise?
In a report dated January 31, 2025, VICE’s Haley Miller wrote that Jackie Redmond asked Punk backstage which surprises he would like to see in the women’s Royal Rumble. Punk joked: “There’s a big one that I’m not going to say because I’m gonna get in trouble.”
Fans interpreted the remark as a possible hint about AJ Lee. That was speculation prompted by his answer, not confirmation of a return. VICE’s report embeds links to the show and clip; the quoted remarks here are attributed to the outlet’s account, rather than an independently reviewed transcript. Read VICE’s report.
Did Punk confirm or deny an AJ Lee return?
VICE reported that Punk later clarified his remark on The Pat McAfee Show: “There are no clues. There are no clues. She’s at home watching Larry [their dog].” The outlet also reported that fans chanted for Lee at a Royal Rumble kickoff event and Punk encouraged them to chant for Larry instead.

Those comments undercut the idea that his original joke was a meaningful clue. They do not, by themselves, establish what WWE may or may not have planned; the report provides no official WWE statement about the rumor.
Was AJ Lee returning to WWE at the Royal Rumble?
The available account does not establish that Lee was booked or set to appear, and it does not verify the event’s match outcome or whether Lee appeared. So “spoiled return” is a speculative framing of Punk’s joke, not a confirmed spoiler. The story concerns the 2025 Royal Rumble event cycle, not an upcoming 2026 appearance.

What was AJ Lee’s wrestling status?
VICE reported that Lee had not wrestled since 2014 and retired from professional wrestling in 2015. It also said she had worked with WOW – Women of Wrestling and appeared on STARZ’s Heels. Those career details are VICE’s account; the available source set does not include a primary interview or official biography establishing the timeline. VICE’s article is the cited source for that context.
