Eric Dane’s wife was the actress Rebecca Gayheart. According to The Independent’s February 2026 report, the two met in 2003, married less than a year later, and separated in 2017. They were still legally married when Dane died of ALS in February 2026 at age 53. Their life apart was close and family-centered, and they continued to co-parent their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.
How the marriage unfolded
The timeline below comes from The Independent’s report, which is the main published account of the relationship at the time of Dane’s death. Where the report does not give a precise date, the table says so.

Legally married, but living apart
The key to understanding this marriage is the difference between legal status and day-to-day life. Legally, Dane and Gayheart were still married when he died, because the divorce case was dismissed rather than completed. In practice, they had lived separately since 2017. Nothing in the report suggests they had resumed living together or reconciled as a couple.
That is why “wife” is accurate for the legal relationship, while the phrase “best friend” describes the emotional relationship Dane said they kept. Dane himself explained the arrangement in his final interview:

- “We’re still really best friends, but we’re not together.”
- “Well we still love each other deeply, I just don’t think we want to live with each other. But there’s a lot of love there.”
Dane also described Gayheart as his “biggest champion.” These remarks were made in a pre-recorded interview with Brad Falchuk for Netflix’s Famous Last Words, and they appear in The Independent’s report as quoted by that outlet.
Gayheart’s description of the bond
The Independent reported that Gayheart wrote about the relationship in a December 2025 essay for The Cut. As the outlet paraphrased it, she wrote that their “love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love.” That wording reflects The Independent’s quotation of the essay, not a separately verified transcript, so readers who want her exact phrasing should go to the essay itself.

What was said after Dane’s death
Gayheart’s Instagram Story
In an Instagram Story after Dane’s death, Gayheart wrote: “I am so blown away by the outpouring of love and support from our community. There aren’t words to express our gratitude.”
The family statement
The family announced the death with this statement, as quoted by The Independent: “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

Dane and Gayheart had two daughters, Billie and Georgia. Both the family statement and the post-separation accounts identify the girls as central to the family’s life, and the report describes the parents as continuing to co-parent after the separation.
A GoFundMe campaign for the daughters had raised $295,000 toward a $500,000 goal, according to The Independent’s report. That figure was current only as of the Sunday afternoon the report cited, so it should be read as a snapshot from early 2026 rather than a current total.

What is established and what is not
- Established by the report: the 2003 meeting, the 2004 marriage, the 2017 separation, the 2025 divorce filing and its dismissal, Dane’s death at 53 after ALS, and the quotes attributed to Dane, Gayheart and the family.
- Not established: the exact wedding date, the contents of the divorce filing beyond what the report describes, and the exact wording of Gayheart’s essay beyond The Independent’s quotation.
- Not current: the fundraiser total, which reflects only the figure reported at the time.
In short, Rebecca Gayheart was Eric Dane’s wife in the legal sense and remained so until his death. The couple had lived apart for years, and Dane chose to describe their bond as friendship and shared family.
