Some were American adaptations built around footage from Japanese tokusatsu series; others shared team, transformation, or monster-fighting conventions without being direct adaptations. The evidence here supports seven useful comparisons, not the twenty promised by the original headline.
Power Rangers borrowed from an earlier Japanese tradition
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was not the origin of the color-coded team-hero format. It adapted Japan’s Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, within the longer-running Super Sentai tradition. A guide commissioned by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs traces Super Sentai to Battle Fever J, which introduced a giant robot to the five-member team concept, and says later entries gave rise to “Power Rangers.” (Agency for Cultural Affairs guide)
That history changes how to read the American shows that followed. Some drew on other Japanese series and repurposed their action footage, while adding American actors, dialogue, and story material. Their resemblance to Power Rangers reflects a shared production approach or genre vocabulary—not, by itself, proof that they copied it or infringed anyone’s rights.

| Show | What the comparison rests on | How to describe the relationship |
|---|---|---|
| VR Troopers | Combined action footage from three Japanese Metal Hero series. | A Saban follow-up using Japanese source footage, not simply a copy of Power Rangers. |
| Masked Rider | Adapted Kamen Rider Black RX and used Japanese action footage. | An adaptation of another Japanese hero property, with a connection to the Power Rangers universe. |
| Big Bad Beetleborgs | Reworked Juukou B-Fighter; its sequel, Beetleborgs Metallix, drew on B-Fighter Kabuto. | A tokusatsu adaptation with newly filmed story segments, including a premise about children becoming comic-book heroes. |
| Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad | Reworked the 1993 Japanese series Denkou Choujin Gridman. | A digital-world and videogame-themed adaptation, rather than an original attempt to reproduce Power Rangers. |
| Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills | Four students defend Earth as a team, inviting an obvious comparison to Power Rangers. | Univision calls it a poor copy, an editorial assessment; the source does not establish a legal claim. |
| Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation | The live-action Turtles series introduced Venus de Milo, adding a female member and a team dynamic Univision compares to Super Sentai. | A Turtles franchise entry with a team-hero resemblance, not a direct Power Rangers adaptation. |
| Los Luchadores | Retained some storytelling and visual traits associated with Super Sentai. | A genre comparison, not an identified adaptation of a Japanese source series. |
Univision discusses all seven as part of the broader effect of Power Rangers, while The Globe independently identifies the Japanese sources for the major Saban adaptations. (Univision’s overview; The Globe’s tokusatsu overview)
Which ones were adaptations, and which only looked similar?
Shows built from Japanese source footage
VR Troopers, Masked Rider, and Big Bad Beetleborgs are best understood as adaptations. The Globe identifies Choujiki Metalder, Jikuu Senshi Spielban, and Uchuu Keiji Shaider as sources for footage in VR Troopers; it traces Masked Rider to Kamen Rider Black RX, and Beetleborgs to Juukou B-Fighter and B-Fighter Kabuto. Univision also identifies Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad as a reworking of Denkou Choujin Gridman. These shows used pre-existing Japanese material while presenting it within American productions.

Shows compared by format or style
The comparison is looser for Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills, Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, and Los Luchadores. Their team structures, visual style, or storytelling may remind viewers of Power Rangers or Super Sentai, but the cited accounts do not identify them as adaptations of the same source footage. A resemblance is a useful viewing comparison, not a finding about copying or legality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the “20 rip-offs” count does not hold up
The available accounts document several titles, not twenty shows that demonstrably copied Power Rangers. Counting the Japanese source series, individual seasons, or spinoffs as separate rip-offs would also confuse source material with American adaptations. A sound list needs to say what qualifies: reused footage, an adaptation relationship, documented influence, or only a recognizable team-hero resemblance.
