“Eulogy” is the best pick if you want the most emotionally affecting standalone story in Black Mirror Season 7. That is an argued recommendation, not an objective or audience-wide winner: creator Charlie Brooker called it one of his favorite episodes, while noting that viewers have ranked every Season 7 episode both at the top and bottom of their lists. If you prefer sharp social satire, a particular genre, or the season’s sequel, another episode may suit you better.
Why “Eulogy” is the strongest all-around pick
“Eulogy” centers on memory and a relationship, giving the season’s technology-driven unease a more intimate, reflective focus. Brooker, the show’s creator and showrunner, called it “one of my favorite Black Mirrors of all time” and praised its emotional depth. That makes it a persuasive choice for viewers who want a story that lingers emotionally rather than one selected by a supposedly objective ranking.
The qualification matters: there is no established audience-wide measure that makes one episode the definitive best. Brooker said, “Of all the seasons we’ve done, this is the one where I think I’ve seen every episode at the top and bottom of someone’s list.” Season 7 ranges from rom-com and space-opera territory to kitchen-sink drama, so the best choice depends on what you want from the show.
Choose an episode by the experience you want
For emotional intimacy: “Eulogy”
Choose “Eulogy” for a reflective, relationship-centered story. It is the clearest recommendation if you value emotional depth over a broadly satirical or high-concept premise.
#1 Best Overall
For bleak social satire: “Common People”
“Common People” is the pick for a pointed technology-and-society story. Brooker described it as “haunting” and “vicious as a piece of satire.” Those are his judgments, not proof that every viewer will find it the season’s best.
For a continuing story: “USS Callister: Into Infinity”
This is a sequel to Season 4’s “USS Callister.” Netflix describes it as the first sequel in Black Mirror history, so it is best approached with the earlier episode’s characters and premise in mind. If you want a self-contained introduction to Season 7, one of the other five stories is a simpler starting point.

For a particular genre or premise
The remaining episodes are “Bête Noire,” “Hotel Reverie,” and “Plaything.” Their official synopses and cast details are available in Netflix’s Season 7 guide. Match the synopsis to your appetite: the season’s shifts in genre and tone are a feature, not a reliable basis for declaring one story universally superior.

How one critic ranked the season
TIME published a worst-to-best ranking on April 10, 2025. It placed “Plaything” sixth. That is one critic’s ordered judgment, not an audience poll, consensus ranking, or substitute for choosing by mood. TIME also identifies memory and history as themes connecting a season that varies widely in tone and genre.
