The number 10 on a Maison Margiela tag refers to Line 10, the Maison’s collection for men. The number is part of the brand’s numeric coding system, and it identifies the product line a garment or object belongs to, not the individual style.
What the circled number means
Maison Margiela uses a numeric coding system to show which line a piece belongs to. According to the brand’s official Numeric Coding guide, the system was introduced in 1997. In that guide, the circled number on a tag is the key: in the brand’s own words, “The circled number on our tag identifies the line to which a garment or object belongs.”
So when you see a circled 10, you are looking at Line 10. The guide describes it as “THE COLLECTION FOR MEN” and characterises it as “Menswear informed by construction, fit, fabric and details.” The guide gives the origin of Line 10 as 1999.
How to identify the line on a tag
- Find the label that carries the Maison’s circled number. It is usually on the garment’s inside label or on the tag attached to an accessory or object.
- Read the number inside the circle. A circled 10 belongs to Line 10, the men’s collection.
- Check the number against the Maison Margiela Numeric Coding page on the official brand site to confirm the line description.
- If the number is a different line, use that line’s description rather than assuming it is men’s wear. Not every number is a men’s line.
Line 10 and Line 14 are not the same
Line 14 is also a men’s line, which is the source of most confusion. The guide describes Line 14 separately as “OUR WARDROBE FOR MEN,” the Maison’s proposition of wardrobe essentials for men. Line 10 is framed around the men’s collection as a whole, while Line 14 is framed around everyday wardrobe pieces. Treating the two as interchangeable is the easiest way to misidentify a product.

The guide does not offer a more detailed comparison of the two lines, so the stated purposes above are the reliable basis for telling them apart.
A current example of a Line 10 product
The Maison’s official product listing includes the Black 10 Print Cotton T-Shirt, an oversized cotton T-shirt with a number 10 graphic (product code S50GC0741M20222855). It is a clear illustration of the Line 10 men’s collection in practice. The graphic is a design element, though, so the number printed on the shirt is not the same thing as the circled coding on a tag. The tag is what identifies the line. Product listings change, and availability of this item may differ by region or date.

The coding system tells you the line, not the age, price tier, or specific season of a piece. The dates in the guide, 1997 for the coding system and 1999 for Line 10, describe when the system and the line were established. They are not measures of performance or popularity.
