Narration is the way a story is told. It is the textual voice and manner through which events reach the reader, and it belongs to discourse, the presentation of a story, rather than to the events themselves. Purdue University’s English department glossary states it directly: “Narration refers to the way that a story is told, and so belongs to the level of discourse”
(Purdue University Department of English, “Definition: Narration”; the page is undated).
Story and discourse: why narration is a separate question
Every narrative has two layers. The story is the sequence of events: who did what, and when. The discourse is how those events are selected, ordered, and presented. Narration sits inside discourse. It answers the question of how the events are conveyed, not which events occurred.
This separation is what makes narration analyzable. The same sequence of events can be told in chronological order by a voice standing outside it, or in fragments by a character remembering it years later. The events have not changed; the narration has. A reader who asks “what is narration?” is usually asking why these two tellings feel different, even when the plot is identical.
Core terms and how they differ
Several terms overlap in everyday talk about novels and short stories. Keeping them apart makes close reading far more precise.

| Term | What it refers to | Question it helps answer |
|---|---|---|
| Story | The events or event sequence | What happened? |
| Discourse | How events are selected, ordered, and presented | How is the material arranged? |
| Narration | The act and manner of telling; the means by which a narrative is presented | How is the story told? |
| Narrator | A textual voice or speech position through which the narrative originates | Who is speaking? |
| Point of view / focalization | The position or perspective through which events are observed and information is limited | Whose perception shapes what the reader learns? |
Point of view and narration are closely related, but they are not identical. Narration covers the whole telling. Point of view describes the angle of perception within it, and it governs what the reader is allowed to know at any given moment. Scholars often use “focalization” for the same idea when they want to stress that a character’s perception filters the account.
The narrator is a textual role, not the author
The narrator is a position inside the text. Uri Margolin’s entry in the Living Handbook of Narratology (created in 2012 and revised in 2014) calls the narrator “a strictly textual category”
that “should be clearly distinguished from the author.”
A novelist can write a narrator whose opinions, biases, or blind spots are entirely unlike her own.

The same caution applies to evaluation. Del Mar College’s guide to point of view (last updated in July 2023) notes that a narrator’s opinions need not be the author’s opinions. When a narrator sounds certain, admiring, or cruel, the reader should ask what the text does with that voice before assuming the writer agrees with it.
How to analyze narration: three questions
Close reading of narration becomes manageable when you work through a fixed sequence of questions. Each one narrows the next.

- Who tells? Look at pronouns and self-reference. Purdue’s glossary distinguishes first-person narration, where the narrator speaks from within the story and uses “I,” from third-person narration, where the narrator speaks from outside it. Also check whether the narrating voice is itself a character who takes part in the events.
- Whose knowledge shapes the account? A third-person narrator may know broadly, stay close to one character’s mind, or report only what could be observed from outside. Del Mar College describes omniscient, limited omniscient, objective, and first-person categories, each with different limits on what the reader can access. Those limits are the practical payoff of the analysis: they determine what the text can hide and when it can reveal.
- How does the telling position the reader? Notice whether the narrator comments, judges, withholds information, or shifts perspective. Reliability is an interpretation, not a label. Support it with textual evidence: contradictions between what the narrator says and what happens, omissions, later events that revise earlier claims, or other speakers whose accounts differ.
Grammatical person and perspective are different axes
A common mistake is to treat “first person” and “third person” as if they settled everything about narration. They describe grammatical stance and the narrator’s relation to the story world. They do not, by themselves, tell you what the narrator knows.
Consider two openings. In “I opened the letter,” the first-person pronoun places a narrating voice inside the story. The sentence alone does not show whether that narrator is truthful, whether the account is written after the fact, or what other characters know. Those claims need evidence from the surrounding passage. In “She opened the letter,” third-person grammar is evident, but the sentence does not establish whether the narrator is omniscient, confined to her perception, or reporting action from outside. Person answers one question; perspective answers another.

Comparison axes for any narrative
When you compare two works, three axes give you a consistent basis:
- Relation to the story world: inside (a character narrates) or outside (an external voice narrates).
- Scope of knowledge and perception: broad access, access limited to one character, or external restriction to observable behavior.
- Visibility and reliability: how openly the narrator intrudes, evaluates, or withholds, and how far the account can be trusted on textual evidence.
Alison Booth’s scholarly chapter summary, “Some Versions of Narration,” in A Companion to the English Novel (first published online in 2015), uses person, focalization, and pace as dimensions for comparing narration. It also defines narration as “a narrator’s representation (rather than enactment) of one or more events, real or imagined, to a narratee, or audience.”
The phrase representation rather than enactment is useful: a narrator reports events to an audience, which is why narration is always a designed relationship and not just a set of facts.

Where to go next
For the definitions above, start with the Purdue glossary and the Margolin entry in the Living Handbook of Narratology. For a broader overview with comparison dimensions, read Booth’s chapter. Booth’s chapter references include Gérard Genette’s Narrative Discourse: An Essay in Method, the foundational study of how narrative discourse is organized, which is the natural next step if you want to go beyond the basic vocabulary.
