British monarchs are buried in several places, but three royal sites stand out: Westminster Abbey in London, St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, and the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore. Their burial records span different periods and forms—from shrine-side graves and floor stones to vaults and a purpose-built mausoleum. They are not a complete list of every royal grave.
At a glance: the principal royal burial places
| Place | Location | Royal burials highlighted by official sources |
|---|---|---|
| Westminster Abbey | Central London | The Abbey says thirty kings and queens are buried there; it separately describes seventeen British monarchs as resting there. |
| St George’s Chapel | Windsor Castle | The Royal Family’s page names ten British monarchs. Elizabeth II was later interred in the King George VI Memorial Chapel on 19 September 2022. |
| Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore | Windsor Home Park, near Frogmore House | Queen Victoria and Prince Albert lie together there. |
These figures use different categories and source pages, so they should not be treated as a single comparable count. The sources do not establish a complete inventory of every English, Scottish and British monarch’s burial.
Westminster Abbey: medieval and Tudor royal burials
Westminster Abbey’s royal burial history reaches back to Edward the Confessor, buried in his new Abbey church in 1066. Later monarchs, including Henry III, Edward I, Edward III, Richard II and Henry V, were buried around the saint’s shrine. The Abbey’s account describes burials in several forms: near the shrine, within tombs, beneath floor stones and in vaults. Westminster Abbey’s history of royal burials and funerals and its guide to royal tombs give further detail.
The Lady Chapel and notable burials
Henry VII’s Lady Chapel became a major royal burial area. Henry VII and Elizabeth of York are buried there, as are Mary I and Elizabeth I, who share a tomb. James I lies in a vault below the Henry VII monument. Several later monarchs—including Charles II, Mary II, William III and Anne—have floor stones or vault burials rather than prominent tomb monuments. George II, buried in 1760, was the last monarch buried at the Abbey.

Mary, Queen of Scots was moved from Peterborough and reburied at Westminster in 1612. Her daughter Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia, is also in the vault. The Abbey says that bones attributed to Edward V were interred there by order of Charles II; its wording describes them as “supposed bones,” not a proven identification.
Why Abbey counts differ
Westminster Abbey’s royal-burials account states: “There are thirteen kings, four queens regnant, eleven queens consort (those married to a king) and two other queens buried in the Abbey making a total of thirty.” The Abbey’s separate visitor page describes it as the resting place of seventeen British monarchs. Those statements use different wording and categories; neither should be silently substituted for the other. The Abbey’s royalty page provides the separate visitor-page figure.

St George’s Chapel: monarchs buried at Windsor Castle
At St George’s Chapel, royal burials include both tombs and vaults. The Royal Family identifies ten British monarchs buried there: Edward IV, Henry VI, Henry VIII, Charles I, George III, George IV, William IV, Edward VII, George V and George VI. Its Chapel page describes five monarchs in two vaults beneath the choir and five in Chapel tombs; a visible monument does not necessarily show the precise location of a coffin. See The Royal Family’s St George’s Chapel page.
Elizabeth II’s burial and the difference between funeral and interment
Elizabeth II was interred in the King George VI Memorial Chapel at St George’s Chapel on 19 September 2022, according to the College of St George’s register of royal burials. Her state funeral service took place at Westminster Abbey, but her interment followed at Windsor. The service location and the burial place were therefore different. The later register entry also means the older Royal Family page’s list of ten should not be read as including Elizabeth II.

Frogmore: Victoria and Albert’s mausoleum
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are buried together at the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore, near Frogmore House in Windsor Home Park, southeast of Windsor Castle. This is a distinct site from St George’s Chapel. The Royal Family calls the mausoleum their final resting place; Royal Collection Trust’s account of the mausoleum gives its setting, while The Royal Family’s Frogmore page identifies the couple buried there.
