No. George R. R. Martin has not finished The Winds of Winter, the sixth novel in A Song of Ice and Fire, and the reporting available for this article does not establish a release date. The “curse of my life” remark comes from an April 2025 interview with Time, and in that same answer Martin said he was still working on the book. Every status claim below is tied to the date of the statement it comes from, because the book’s situation has been described at different points over the past decade.

Where the book stands as of October 2026

The most recent direct description of the manuscript that this article can date is the one Martin gave in April 2025. Later coverage, including a January 2026 interview reported by The Independent and a September 2026 timeline published by The Week, repeats or summarizes that account rather than announcing a new milestone. Nothing reviewed here shows that the novel has been completed, delivered to the publisher, or scheduled.

The Winds of Winter follows A Dance with Dragons, published in 2011, which remains the most recent novel in the series. Readers who expect a sequel in the same timeline should note that the wait has now run well beyond the gap between the first five books.

What the “curse of my life” line actually meant

Martin’s full answer in the April 2025 Time interview, as quoted by The Independent, reads: “That’s the curse of my life. There’s no doubt Winds of Winter is 13 years late. I’m still working on it. I have periods where I make progress and then other things divert my attention and suddenly I have a deadline for one of the HBO shows, I have something else to do.”

The phrase expresses frustration with the delay, not a verdict on the book. He describes the work as uneven, interrupted by other obligations, and he attributes the stall to those competing demands rather than to any single cause. The quote does not say he has abandoned the novel, and it does not say he will never finish it. It also does not give a publication window. Note that the transcript of the Time interview itself was not checked directly; the wording here is the one reported by The Independent and The Week.

How his account of the book has changed

Martin has described the manuscript’s status several times over the past decade. The table below lists each dated statement that this article relies on, what it says about the book, and whether it gives any release date.

Date Source Status described Release date given
January 2, 2016 Martin’s own blog post “THE WINDS OF WINTER is not finished.” He said there were hundreds of pages and dozens of chapters, with much still to write and revise. Not stated; he said he could not say when it would be completed or published.
April 2025 Time interview, as quoted by The Independent and The Week “13 years late.” He said he was still working on it and that progress came in periods. Not stated
January 2026 Interview, as reported by The Independent He described the writing as getting harder and said he sometimes was not in the mood for it. The book was described as unfinished. Not stated in the reported material
April 2026 Publisher response, as reported by GamesRadar Bantam Books said online claims of a leaked manuscript and a fall 2026 release were false. No release date; the reported fall 2026 date was denied
September 2026 The Week timeline Summarizes the April 2025 interview and his explanation about competing deadlines. Not stated

The 2016 post is the only first-person text here that states the book’s status in writing without a later interview intervening. Its usefulness is historical: a page count and chapter count from a decade ago tell you how far the book had come then, not how far it has come since.

Why the delay keeps being attributed to other work

Martin’s explanation has been consistent across the 2025 and later accounts: writing progresses in bursts, and other commitments take over. The most specific example he gives is a deadline for one of the HBO series, which pulled his attention elsewhere. That is his account of his own working life, and it is the only cause the reporting attributes to him. Readers should not treat it as a complete explanation, and no source reviewed here assigns a specific cause beyond what he described.

Rumors and the publisher’s response

In April 2026, online posts circulated claiming that a manuscript had leaked and that the novel would appear in fall 2026. GamesRadar reported that Bantam Books, Martin’s publisher, called those claims false. Treat that as a denial of a specific rumor, not as a statement about the book’s completion. A denial of one date does not confirm any other date, and no alternative publication plan has been reported.

What the evidence does and does not establish

  • Established: Martin said in April 2025 that he was still working on the novel, and he described the work as interrupted by other obligations.
  • Established: In January 2026, as reported by The Independent, he described the writing as harder and his motivation as inconsistent.
  • Established: Bantam Books denied the April 2026 rumors of a leaked manuscript and a fall 2026 release.
  • Not established: A completed manuscript, a delivery date to the publisher, or any official release date.
  • Not established: A forecast of when the book will be published, or whether it will be finished at all.

Old deadlines, page counts, and fan theories about the story should not be read as a release schedule. The 2016 statement that the book was unfinished, the April 2025 statement that it was still in progress, and the January 2026 description of harder work all point the same way, but none of them is a date.

How to check for changes

If you want to know whether the status has changed, look for a direct statement from Martin on his own blog or an announcement from Bantam Books, rather than secondhand reporting or social media posts. Compare any new claim with the dated statements above before accepting it. A new interview that repeats “still working on it” is not news about completion, and a claim of a finished manuscript should be checked against a publisher announcement.

For the other half of the headline’s question, the answer remains no. The Winds of Winter is not finished as of the most recent reporting this article can date, and no confirmed release date has been established.
