Janney plays Grace Penn, who takes office as president after the sitting U.S. president dies, and Whitford plays her husband, Todd Penn. The two previously worked together for seven seasons on The West Wing, and Janney has said that working with Whitford again felt like home.
Who they play in Season 3
Janney and Whitford are not reprising their West Wing roles. In The Diplomat, Janney is Grace Penn, and Whitford is Todd Penn, the First Gentleman. Because the pairing is the thing fans will notice first, it helps to judge the new characters on their own terms: Grace is a president who has inherited the job in the middle of a crisis, and Todd is a husband whose position puts him inside the same pressures.

What Season 3 sets up
Netflix Tudum’s July 8, 2026 season update states that all eight episodes of Season 3 are streaming. The season opens after the U.S. president dies, and Grace takes office while Kate Wyler deals with the political fallout and with her relationship to the new First Gentleman. Tudum summarizes the season as one in which Kate gets what she wanted, in a way that turns into a nightmare.
A Netflix cast interview published March 11, 2026 describes the season’s structure in terms of relationships rather than only policy. It says the season follows shifting alliances among Grace, Todd, Kate, and Hal, and that Grace and Todd’s marriage shows a more private side of Grace than viewers have seen in the political scenes.

Janney on working with Whitford again
In an interview with ELLE published October 16, 2025, Janney explained what the reunion meant to her: “It felt like home to me, being with Brad.” She added context that explains the comfort. She and Whitford had spent extensive time together on The West Wing, so she felt at ease filming a bedroom scene with him in The Diplomat. The remark is about familiarity between colleagues, not about any change in the characters they play.

Whitford on the personal and the political
Whitford’s comments in the Netflix cast interview point to what keeps the series grounded. He said: “The thing that I love about this show is the diplomacy is always just amplified and resonating with what’s going on personally.” That framing matches the season’s design, in which the handoff of presidential power is tested through a marriage and a set of shifting loyalties rather than through procedure alone.
