Cybernews reported his remarks on February 25, 2026. Hegseth gave no timeline, and the report said no formal executive order had been issued at that point. What is established is a stated review effort and a public statement of intent. A written directive, a release date, and a completed release are not established by that reporting.
What Hegseth said, and what he did not say
The remarks came in an interview with Kristin Fisher, as reported by Cybernews in an article titled “Not on my bingo card:” Pentagon moves on UFO file release after Trump push. The article attributes the following to Hegseth:
- “We’ve got our people working on it right now.” This is the core statement that the department is actively working on the matter.
- The department would be in compliance with the stated push. Cybernews described Hegseth as saying the Pentagon would comply with Trump’s public call for disclosure.
- “I did not have that on my bingo card at all.” The line reflects his surprise at being asked about the subject, according to the article’s framing.
- No timeline. Hegseth did not say when files would be reviewed, released, or completed.
The article also stated that no formal executive order had been issued as of its publication. Readers should treat the phrase “UFO files” as the headline’s shorthand. The statements describe a review and release process in general terms, not a defined document set.
Public push, written directive, review, and release are different stages
Headlines about this story tend to blur several separate steps. The February 2026 reporting supports only some of them.

| Stage | What the February 25, 2026 reporting establishes | What remains unverified |
|---|---|---|
| Presidential push | Trump publicly pushed for disclosure, as Cybernews described it | The exact wording and scope of any instruction he gave |
| Written directive | Cybernews said no formal executive order had been issued as of its report | Whether a directive was issued later, its form, the agencies responsible, and any deadline |
| Agency review | Hegseth said Pentagon personnel were working on the issue | Which records are under review, how many there are, and which offices hold them |
| Public release | No release was reported in the February 2026 article | Whether any material has been published since then |
Keeping these stages apart matters when you read later coverage. A statement that the government is “moving on” files describes the review stage. It does not describe a published record.
Timeline of the record so far
- 2023: A Defense Department account said the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) was examining 650 cases. This is a dated count from an older briefing, not a current total.
- March 8, 2024: AARO published Historical Record Report Volume 1, which reviewed the U.S. government’s historical UAP record.
- March 2024: Acting AARO Director Tim Phillips discussed that report at a Defense Department media engagement.
- February 25, 2026: Cybernews reported Hegseth’s interview remarks about the Pentagon working on a possible UAP-file release after Trump’s push.
What AARO’s 2024 historical review concluded
The most recent AARO review cited in this article is the 2024 historical record report. It found no verifiable evidence that the U.S. government or private industry had access to or reverse-engineered extraterrestrial technology. At the March 2024 briefing, Phillips put the two main findings this way:

These are conclusions about the records AARO reviewed in 2024. They do not predict what any later-released records will contain, and they should be read as that review’s findings.
“Unidentified” is not the same as “alien”
AARO and the Defense Department use the term “unidentified anomalous phenomena” (UAP). Department terminology has broadened beyond aerial sightings to anomalous phenomena across domains. “UFO,” the headline’s term, is familiar public shorthand. In both cases, the label describes the observer’s state of knowledge: the object or event has not been identified. It does not establish a cause.

A case can also stay unresolved because the information needed to reach a conclusion is missing. AARO’s 2023 account said the office would not close cases without conclusions it could defend, and it stressed data limitations. An unresolved case is therefore an evidence problem, not evidence of a particular explanation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a UAP file release prove aliens exist?
No. A release shows that records were reviewed, selected, and made public. It does not by itself establish an extraterrestrial origin for any object in those records. The 2024 AARO review, which is the most detailed official review cited here, found no verifiable evidence of extraterrestrial activity or access to extraterrestrial technology.

When you watch a documentary or read coverage of released files, these checks help separate what the material shows from what it is being used to argue:
- Identify the document type. An agency report, raw sensor data, a witness account, and a secondhand summary carry different weight.
- Find who reached the conclusion. Check whether a label such as “unidentified” comes from the agency or from the filmmaker or commentator.
- Separate “unidentified” from “non-human.” Many reports are classed as unresolved because data are insufficient, which is different from a finding of non-human origin.
- Check the source and date. Confirm whether a document is an original, when it was produced, and whether it has been edited or excerpted.
- Test the claim against the official record. Ask whether it addresses the 2024 AARO conclusions rather than ignoring them.
What remains unknown
The sources available for this article do not settle several questions that readers may expect answers to:
- Whether a written presidential directive exists, and if so its form, scope, responsible agencies, and deadline.
- Whether any UAP records have been released since February 25, 2026, and what they contain.
- Whether AARO’s conclusions have changed since the 2024 historical record report.
Until an official document or update confirms these points, the accurate summary is the one above: a stated Pentagon review effort, no timeline, and no formal order reported at the time of the February 2026 article.
