Carey clarified in 2016 that she knew who Lopez was but did not know her personally. Lopez, meanwhile, was reported as saying they had met many times. That mismatch—and the speculation around it—helped turn a brief exchange into a lasting pop-culture feud story.
What did “I don’t know her” mean?
Carey explained the distinction during a 2016 appearance on Watch What Happens Live. “It wasn’t like I don’t know who she is — of course I do,” she said, as reported by ABC News on May 18, 2016. Carey said she meant that she did not know Lopez personally, and that she was not going to pretend they were friends.
Carey also described herself as forgetful and said she did not want to act as if she and Lopez were close. In a separate account of the appearance, Bravo reported her saying, “It’s no offense to anybody.” Those comments establish how Carey later explained her own words; they do not establish what Lopez thought of the exchange or settle the private history between them.
Why did the remark become a feud story?
The contrast between Carey’s account and Lopez’s reported account gave the line its staying power. In 2016, reports quoted Lopez as saying the two had met many times, while Carey maintained that she did not know Lopez personally. Those are differing descriptions of their acquaintance, not proof by themselves of a feud.

The original remark is commonly situated in an interview from the early 2000s, but the sources cited here do not establish its exact date or provide a complete transcript. Carey later recalled that the interviewer first asked her about Beyoncé, whom she praised, and then asked about Lopez. That recollection helps explain the exchange’s context, but it remains Carey’s later account of the interview.
Over time, interview remarks, press coverage and fan interpretation were folded into a story of rivalry. A widely discussed 2015 moment—Lopez glancing at her phone during Carey’s Billboard Music Awards performance—also drew attention. When asked about it in 2016, Lopez said she had watched most of the long performance and looked down briefly. The glance became material for speculation, but does not demonstrate hostility.

Did a song sample cause the rift?
One reported explanation links the story to Carey’s “Loverboy” and Lopez’s “I’m Real,” both associated with 2001. In a report on Carey’s later comments, The Independent attributed to producer Irv Gotti the claim that the fallout began after Carey heard a sample from her unreleased song “Loverboy” on Lopez’s “I’m Real.”
That account is an attributed explanation, not a verified origin for Carey’s remark or a complete account of the alleged feud. The reporting does not independently establish that the sample dispute caused the exchange, so it should not be treated as settled fact.

What did Carey say about her intent?
In 2018, Carey told Pitchfork, in a passage quoted by The Independent, “I really was trying to say something nice or say nothing at all. I really was.” This is Carey’s stated intent, not a definitive ruling on how every listener should interpret the original moment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can—and can’t—be concluded?
The public record supports a narrow conclusion: Carey later said she knew who Lopez was but did not know her personally; Lopez was reported as saying they had met many times; and remarks and incidents were interpreted as signs of a feud. Those accounts document what the two women said publicly, not the full private relationship between them.
