Bob Trevino Likes It began with a mistaken Facebook friend request. Writer-director Tracie Laymon was trying to reach her estranged father when she connected with a stranger who shared his name. She chose to keep the connection after discovering the mistake: his kind, fatherly messages helped her heal. Laymon calls the film “inspired by it, not based on” her experience—a fictional story shaped by its emotional truth.

How Tracie Laymon met the stranger named Bob

Laymon told Collider that her father was upset with her and had stopped returning her calls and emails. Looking for him on Facebook, she sent a friend request to a man with the same name. At first, she thought she had reached her father. When she realized the man was a stranger, she decided to remain friends with him because his kindness felt good and she needed it.

In an ABC News interview, Laymon described the moment of mistaken recognition this way: “It was kind of a shock at first because, in the moment where I thought it was him, he had access to my heart.” The stranger offered gentle encouragement rather than grand gestures. During the pandemic, for example, he told her he thought her shaved head looked great. Laymon also recalled that he wished her a happy birthday every year.

In her director statement, Laymon describes a friendship that lasted nine years, including annual “Happy birthday!” and “Way to go, kiddo!” messages. That duration is her account of the friendship, not a separately verified timeline.

What the film changes—and what it keeps

Laymon has drawn a clear line between her life and the movie. In the Collider interview, she said: “It is inspired by it, not based on. It’s a fictionalized version of an emotion.” The real relationship unfolded largely online, she explained, so it did not provide the conventional sequence of cinematic scenes a feature film needs. She kept the emotional center—her experience of connection and healing—while inventing events and giving the story a screen-ready shape.

In an interview with SAGindie, Laymon likewise called the movie “a work of fiction” drawn from her emotional truths and said she took “major liberties.” She was comfortable with those changes when they remained true to what the experience meant to her. The result should not be read as a literal account of every real person or event.

The official film synopsis follows Lily Trevino, who seeks familial connection after being abandoned by her mother and suddenly estranged from her father. Lily encounters Bob through an unexpected Facebook message. The film’s Bob has put his own need for connection aside while working long hours and prioritizing his wife; the friendship becomes a source of connection and healing for both. Barbie Ferreira plays Lily, John Leguizamo plays the supportive Facebook Bob, and French Stewart plays Lily’s biological father, according to ABC News.

Why the name Bob Trevino matters

The name in the title has another real-life connection, separate from the Facebook mix-up. Laymon told Collider that a mentor and chosen-family friend named Bob Trevino had a good heart, and that his wife had been kind to her. She asked him for permission to use his name so the film could carry something of his heart; he agreed.

That real-life Bob, the stranger who befriended Laymon online, and the fictional character in the film are distinct. The name links them, but the film is not a documentary portrait of any one of them.

The story’s recognition at SXSW

Bob Trevino Likes It premiered at SXSW in 2024 and won both the Grand Jury Award and the Audience Award for Narrative Feature, as reported by ABC News and SAGindie. Laymon’s director statement places the film’s central idea in the space between painful relationships and new ones: “This film is about letting go of people who continually hurt us to make room for people who want to love us.” She also writes, “Everyone needs a Bob.”
