In an interview tied to the season-three premiere of Take 5 with Zan Rowe, Dannii Minogue described how her sister Kylie’s breast cancer affected the family, and how music helped them through it. The interview was reported by ABC News / Double J on 1 October 2024. Dannii’s account is a personal recollection, not medical information, and the details below are hers as reported by ABC.

What Dannii said about Kylie’s illness

Dannii recalled that Kylie became ill with breast cancer while she was on tour. She said the period was difficult for the whole family. She also described visiting Kylie during chemotherapy, at a time when Kylie was very unwell. Dannii did not describe Kylie’s treatment plan, prognosis or medical decisions, and nothing in the interview should be read as guidance on any of those.

Why “Kids” is central to the story

Of the five songs Dannii chose as having shaped her life, “Kids” stands out because the interview ties it to that hard period. “Kids” is the duet by Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue, released in late 2000. Dannii said she and her sister would move around to music together, and that music helped them through the illness. The report also connects the song to the sisters later performing it together when Kylie returned to the stage.

Three statements from the interview

ABC’s report attributes the following statements to Dannii. They are quoted as reported in that article, and they have not been checked against a full transcript of the interview.

  • On music as support: “In the process of getting her better, it was music that kept us going,” Dannii said.
  • On Kylie’s attitude during treatment: “She’s so professional. I’m like, ‘Oh for God’s sake, we need to keep you alive’.” This is the line behind the headline, and it reflects Dannii’s own frustration and affection rather than a medical assessment.
  • On returning to the stage: “The joy when we came out on stage from the audience was unbelievable,” Dannii recalled.

Fans and the return to the stage

Dannii also recalled that fans kept their concert tickets while Kylie recovered, and that the family felt the fans’ love and support during that time. This is her recollection of how it felt. It is not a measured or independently verified account of fan behaviour, and the interview does not give figures for it.

Context and limits of this account

  • Source type: This is a first-person account reported by a media outlet. It is not a medical source and does not include any statistics about breast cancer.
  • Verification: The quotations come from ABC’s written report and have not been compared against a full audio or video transcript.

If you want to hear the song

“Kids (with Kylie Minogue)” appears on the CD edition of Robbie Williams’s In And Out Of Consciousness: The Greatest Hits 1990–2010, according to the official Robbie Williams site. Current availability on the CD or on streaming services was not confirmed for this article, so check your preferred platform directly.

The interview is useful on its own terms: it shows how a sibling relationship and a shared song carried one family through a hard year, in the words of the person who lived it.
