Liza and Charles do not stay together, and the finale does not pair Liza with Josh either. The last episode ends with Charles leaving for an artists’ retreat to finish his book, Liza in charge of Empirical, and a final bar scene that leaves Liza’s romantic future open. The ending is best read as a qualified happy ending: Liza gets the career and the circle of friends she built, but the romance is deliberately left undecided. Her original age lie gave her the career, and it is the reason the relationship with Charles could not survive.
What happens between Liza and Charles in the finale
The finale starts after Liza and Charles have patched things up. The problem is not that the lie is forgotten. Charles tells Liza he has made peace with the original deception, but the episode tests whether the two of them can build something on complete honesty. A comic musical number about Liza’s lies brings the “big lie” back into the story, and the episode uses it to push the relationship forward rather than treating it as old history.
The Yaddo submission
Liza secretly submits Charles’s unfinished manuscript to Yaddo, the writers’ colony in Saratoga Springs, New York, and he is accepted. The secret is a protective act, but it lands as a breach of trust because Charles has built his sense of integrity around honesty. For him, the omission matters as much as a lie would.
“Would you have told me?”
Charles asks whether Liza would have told him if he had not been accepted. Her answer is that she does not know, and that she possibly would not have. That exchange is the turning point. It shows that the original lie still shapes the relationship, and that Liza has not yet learned to share information when the truth is uncomfortable.

When Liza asks whether they are going to make it, they both accept that they will not. Darren Star, the series creator, explained in finale interviews published by the Los Angeles Times and TVLine on June 10, 2021, that Charles could not forgive the original deception and that Liza felt she would always be subject to suspicion and tests.
The breakup and Charles’s departure
After the breakup, Liza plans to resign from Empirical. Charles instead tells her he is going to Yaddo to finish his book, and he leaves the company in her hands. The tone of their last exchange is appreciative rather than hostile. Star described the pair as two people who each projected an idea onto the other and who had not spent enough time together as their authentic selves. Star also credited Liza with helping Charles rediscover his creative ambitions.

The professional ending at Empirical
The career storyline is the clearest part of the finale. Liza takes a leadership role at Empirical. Kelsey’s Inkubator project finds a home with a Los Angeles company, and the friends celebrate their next steps. This is the concrete forward motion that the romantic plot does not provide.
Does Liza end up with Josh?
The final scene brings Liza and Josh back to the bar where they first met. The sequence repeats the shape and banter of that first meeting, and Josh tells her he has been by her side all along. The camera leaves the two of them together without saying what happens next.

Star said he did not know whether the two would be together. He added that he believes they love each other and will always be part of each other’s lives. In the same interviews he said he wanted to leave “all possibilities” open. The scene therefore confirms affection, shared history and the possibility of a renewed connection. It does not establish a relationship or a shared future.
Two ways to read the last Josh scene
| Reading | What supports it | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Romance could resume | The callback to the first meeting, Josh’s “by your side all along” line, and the warmth of the closing exchange | No confirmed couple status or shared future on screen |
| A full-circle image of a continuing bond | Star’s comment that the two love each other and will stay in each other’s lives, and his stated intent to leave the question open | Any promise that the two will become a couple |
The explicit text and the creator’s stated intent support the first reading only as a possibility. They do not support a definite romantic reunion.

Does the lie lead to a happy ending?
The honest answer depends on what “happy” means. If it means romantic closure, the finale does not deliver it. If it means that the protagonist ends with agency, a career she wanted and people who matter to her, it does.
The trade-off the lie created
Star summarized the lie’s cost and benefit to TVLine in a single line: “The lie had consequences. It gave her a career, but it cost her personal relationships.” The career is real. Liza returns to publishing and rises to lead Empirical. The personal cost is also real. Charles cannot fully escape the suspicion the lie created, and the Yaddo secret shows how hard it is for the two of them to practise the kind of honesty he requires.

Why the ending is framed as reinvention
Star said the show was never about Liza finding a man but about her reinventing herself. He also rejected the idea that her story had to resolve as a choice between Josh and Charles. Read that way, the finale is not withholding a romance it promised. It is closing the story Liza was actually telling.
A scorecard of the finale’s threads
| Thread | Where it ends | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Liza’s career | Leads Empirical after Charles hands the company to her | Resolved on screen |
| Liza and Charles | Break up; Charles leaves for Yaddo to finish his book | Resolved as a breakup |
| Kelsey’s Inkubator project | Moves to a Los Angeles company | Resolved on screen |
| Liza and Josh | Reunited at the bar where they met, with no stated future | Deliberately open |
Liza’s happy ending is a matter of agency. Her romantic life is the one thread the series chose not to close.
