Writer-director Caroline Lindy has said the ending of Your Monster is meant to stay ambiguous. Monster may be real within the story, or he may not be, and Lindy does not declare which. What she does say is that he is real to Laura, and she considers that the reading that matters. The final scene is best understood as a deliberate choice between a literal horror interpretation and a psychological one, not a twist that settles the question.
What happens in the final scene
The ending returns Laura to the stage and sets her against Jacob, her ex-boyfriend. A Yahoo Entertainment account dated October 30, 2024, of a Deadline interview with Lindy describes the closing image: Laura performing with Jacob’s mutilated body behind her, and Monster nowhere in sight. The same report says Lindy imagines Laura and Monster “riding off into the sunset together,” which she offers as a deliberately contrasting possibility. Because this description comes through a secondary report, treat the finale details as reported rather than confirmed shot by shot.

The violence can be read two ways, and the film leaves both open. Within its horror-comedy genre, it can be a literal event that happens in the story. Read psychologically, it becomes an externalized image of Laura’s rage and her refusal to remain diminished.
The filmmaker’s own answer
In a verified r/movies AMA dated October 29, 2024, Lindy answered the question directly:

“The ending is supposed to be ambiguous, yes! Is Monster real? He may be, he may not be? But at the end of the day, he’s real to Laura, and that’s what really matters in this story.”
That answer separates two questions that viewers often merge. Whether Monster exists as an objective fact inside the film is left open. Whether he matters to Laura’s story is not.

The murder as metaphor
In an ABC News Australia interview published December 2, 2024, Lindy described the killing this way:
“The murder of the ex-boyfriend is metaphorical. It’s to kill off the toxic things in your life that are holding you down.”

She names the forces Laura is fighting: Jacob has broken her heart, taken her work, denied her the chance to star in the role, and slept with her best friend. The film’s official synopsis frames the story as one about “falling in love with your inner rage.” Taken together, these statements make the metaphorical reading the best supported by the filmmaker’s own framing. That reading does not cancel the possibility that Monster exists inside the film’s horror-comedy world.
Where Monster fits in Laura’s story
ABC’s interview account has Lindy saying the love story is not between a monster and a person, or between a person and a figment of her imagination. It is, she says, about a woman falling in love with herself and “her demons.” Only that final phrase is Lindy’s own wording; the rest is the outlet’s summary of her comments.

On this reading, Monster is Laura’s anger given a character and a voice. He begins as something frightening, becomes companionable, and ends as part of the force that lets her act. Lindy has also said the story grew out of her own experience of cancer and a breakup in her early twenties. That is a source of inspiration, not evidence that Laura’s events are documentary, and it should not be used to settle whether Monster is literal.

| Question | Literal reading: Monster exists in the story | Psychological reading: Monster is Laura’s rage |
|---|---|---|
| Basis in the film | Monster is presented as a character who interacts with Laura | The same interactions can be read as her anger given a voice |
| The killing | A literal act within the genre’s horror-comedy world | A metaphor for removing toxic forces, in Lindy’s words |
| Monster absent from the finale | Consistent with the ambiguity cue; not proof that he does not exist | Consistent with the ambiguity cue; the anger has become part of her action |
| Filmmaker’s position | Lindy keeps it open: “He may be, he may not be?” | Lindy calls Monster real to Laura and the love story one with herself |
The table shows why neither reading can be confirmed from the ending alone. The stage finale supports an intentional ambiguity, but it does not prove Monster is gone or never existed.

Your Monster is a narrative horror-comedy, not a documentary, so its ending is a matter of interpretation rather than a factual record. A Releases.com listing checked on October 8, 2026 showed VOD and Max availability in the US and no announced US DVD or Blu-ray date. That is a dated snapshot of a status that changes, and availability varies by territory, so confirm it before planning to watch.
