Zayn Malik joined Pakistani band AUR on an Urdu-language version of “Tu Hai Kahan,” released in January 2024. The title means “Where are you?” Although the collaboration was described as Malik’s first official Urdu-language release, it was not the first time he had sung in Urdu.
What is “Tu Hai Kahan”?
“Tu Hai Kahan” means “Where are you?” AUR, a Pakistani band, first released the song; Malik’s January 2024 collaboration is a new version based on that earlier track. ITV reported the release on January 15, 2024, describing it as an Urdu-language remake: ITV’s January 15 report.
Did Zayn Malik sing in Urdu for the first time?
Not literally. Malik sings in Urdu on the AUR collaboration, but NPR’s January 19, 2024, coverage noted that he had sung in Urdu before. Calling “Tu Hai Kahan” his “first-ever Urdu song” overstates the distinction; “first official Urdu-language release” or “high-profile Urdu collaboration” is more precise. NPR’s report also quotes BBC Asian Network presenter Haroon Rashid describing Malik’s performance as “by far the most fluent” he had heard him speaking his mother tongue. That is Rashid’s opinion, not a formal assessment of Malik’s language proficiency.
How did the collaboration come about?
Malik said he was “incredibly humbled” when AUR reached out and asked him to collaborate on the song, according to Asian Express’s January 2024 coverage. The release was accompanied by a music video. What is known about its reception?
Contemporary coverage reported on the song’s popularity, but the available figures are dated snapshots, not current totals. Dawn’s February 2024 review included a YouTube view count from the time it was written; that figure should not be treated as the video’s present-day view count.
