The One Piece is a new WIT Studio adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga, planned for Netflix. It starts the story from the beginning rather than continuing the long-running Toei anime. WIT Studio CEO George Wada’s “competing with Disney” remark describes the studio’s ambition to reach a global audience—not a Disney partnership or a formal contest. What is The One Piece?
The One Piece is a new anime adaptation of Oda’s manga, produced by WIT Studio for Netflix, according to What’s on Netflix’s overview. It begins at the start of the story and is a separate project from the existing Toei Animation series. It is not a sequel, and viewers do not need to watch the older anime first.

The distinction matters because Netflix also has the live-action ONE PIECE. That is a different production from this anime remake; Netflix’s renewal announcement concerns the live-action show, not the WIT Studio adaptation.
What did WIT Studio’s “competing with Disney” comment mean?
WIT Studio president and CEO George Wada said that the studio’s work now reaches audiences around the world through Netflix, and that it is “no longer competing only in the Japanese market” but is competing with “global giants like Hollywood and Disney.” The remark, reproduced in What’s on Netflix’s interview excerpt, describes Wada’s view of the global entertainment market. It does not indicate a Disney deal, collaboration, or direct release battle.

Why remake the story?
Wada connected the project to creator Eiichiro Oda’s concern that the manga’s long, detailed story and older animation might be less immediately appealing to younger viewers accustomed to modern productions. Wada said the aim is to retell the story with modern techniques and make it accessible to a new generation worldwide. This is the studio’s stated creative rationale, not evidence that Oda has rejected the original anime or that audience research has proved younger viewers dislike it.
When is The One Piece coming to Netflix?
What’s on Netflix reported on June 23, 2026 that the first season was planned for February 2027. That is a reported window, not a final date confirmed by Netflix in the sources available here. The report does not establish territory-by-territory availability or the eventual audio and subtitle lineup, so those details remain unconfirmed.

What will the first season adapt?
Reporting places the opening season in the East Blue portion of the manga, with the story reaching the Baratie arc. GamesRadar says the season covers the first 50 manga chapters in its explainer on the remake. Treat that chapter count and arc coverage as reported scope rather than a Netflix-confirmed episode-by-episode guide.
The same June 2026 report lists seven episodes with a combined runtime of 300 minutes—five hours in total. Those figures are secondary reporting, not independently confirmed Netflix specifications, and could change before release.

No advance reading is necessary: the remake is intended to start the story from the beginning. If you would rather meet the characters in Oda’s original format, start with One Piece manga, Volume 1; the new adaptation’s reported starting point makes it a natural companion, not a prerequisite.
